sousoun Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Hi all, I was wondering if it was harmful to swap a bios chip from a working P8Z68-V/Gen3 (bios 3402) to a non-working (bios related problem) P8Z68-V Pro... To explain my problem, I made a build with second hand parts where I had a P8Z68-V Pro and a i5-3550 ... and no POST. Cpu_led flashing at POST. I suspected a stock version of the bios installed on the mobo, which didn't support the i5-3550 yet. Unable to flash that bios before POST, I borrowed a P8Z68-V/Gen3 and was able to perform a hotflash to upgrade the bios chip to the newest version of the V Pro, 3603. I was also able to test all of my components with that V/Gen3 where I could get a succesful POST and boot. Bios chip from the Gen3 and V Pro are exactly the same and I suspect a faulty chip on the V Pro because with that chip, I get the same cpu_led error on the V/Gen3, which is working perfectly fine with his proper bios chip. What do you think ? I can't risk trying to boot with the chip from the Gen3 on the V Pro if it harms it in any way, since that Gen3 is not mine ! Thanks in advance for your answers ! IVIYTH0S Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 It couldn't hurt the bios chip, I say go for it. Make sure you pull the battery so it can reset to defaults too before you start it up! I need to send my bios chip out from my Sapphire APU...it's not like anyone else on here has a spare bios chip for me for such a rare configuration haha Let us know how it goes! Apparently, bios from the two motherboards seem to be different, even if it's the same chip, same serie and same revision number of the asus bios. Moreover, it seems to change the cmos settings to incompatible values when putting the chip back to it's original motherboard.... Inconclusive test, so ! I'm thinking of trying to buy a new chip for the faulty V pro, it might just be that or the full motherboard that is dead. And yeah, not so common APU chips, I give that ! IVIYTH0S Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 It was worth a shot! Yeah, I'm guessing the motherboard automatically knows to clear the CMOS settings when the bios chip's removed/replaced. I'd check out this guy for maybe reflashing your old bios chip back to working order: http://badbiosflash.com/it was recommended by another member on here. Yeah, Sapphire boards are few and far between, not to mention E350 APUs are increasingly less common with the passing of time. But I was using it as my HTPC and it the little tike handled things pretty well but I recently replaced it with a socket AM1 setup which is pretty nice but still very efficient (if not more so).
