Why raise the Northbridge voltage?

Here is a question I never asked before and I am just wondering about it cause it keeps bothering me. Why do you need to raise the Northbridge voltage when OCing your CPU and RAM?

On your 478 setup did you have to raise your NB voltage to get that OC?

 

it made it stable @ 3.85, I only upped it to 1.6v though

 

rule of thumb on many 478 setups, AGP voltage=NB voltage
