How To Set Drive Letters On A Brand New Xp Install

Okay, how can I set the drives to have different letters? I want it to be like this:

 

Hard drive 1 (main): W:

Hard Drive 2 (secondary): X:

CD Drive: Z:

Floppy Drive: Y:

 

 

Is this something I do at install, in the BIOS, or after install? Whichever of the three, how do I do it?

Acronis Disk Director will do the hard disks. I'm not sure if it'll do the floppy nad the optical though

You can use windows disk management (right click my computer and select manage) to do this, but that will not change your system drive letter. You can use partition magic for that.

I used to use partition magic, but it started giving me some funky drive errors on startup that would never go away, so I switched to acronis and all was well from then on.

So do I rename them now or after install?

after install. Those letters are just a designation by windows, so changing them before a reinstall in pointless because they will be reassigned. See if during the installation, you can change the letter. I do not think you can, but I could be wrong.

Yep disk (i jsut made a bad typo on that involving a c instead of an s...oops) management is the easiest way w/o other software to change it . Good luck on the format, you'll need it

Well I renamed my second hard drive for Games to Z:Games

 

 

That Disk Director thing requires you to buy it for anything useful like changing your main drive's letter. I'm a fan of the letters W, Y, Z, and X.

Why not S? S is a good word. So is E... all the rest are like bad words. They're crappy.
