CheeseMan42 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 NVIDIA has been making separate GPUs for the desktop and notebook markets in order to accommodate the thermal restrictions of mobile systems. The company has announced that it will no longer be the case as it plans to create MXM and integrated designs of the GeForce GTX 980 desktop edition for notebook systems. This has become a possibility as silicon efficiency has increased and die sizes have come down. The new GPUs are expected to have lower TDP numbers than the current 165W of desktop cards. NVIDIA is leaving the implementation up to OEM partners, though it did offer guidance and support. The GPUs will be subject to "higher requirements for performance and efficiency to ensure there will be enough headroom for use in a notebook, as well as some extra for overclocking." The GPU will have all 2048 cores found in the desktop version but might have different voltage or clock speeds.
