CheeseMan42 Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Cisco has announced that it plans to acquire cloud-based security firm OpenDNS for $635 million. Cisco had previously invested $35 million in the company and as a result obtained "defensive rights that give it an edge to acquire companies it has invested in ahead of competitors." Cisco has traditionally focused on security from a firewall perspective, though it branched into intrusion detection and prevention with the acquisition of Sourcefire in 2013. The purchase of OpenDNS enhances this ability as it "uses predictive intelligence to block malware, botnets and phishing threats that antivirus and firewalls miss."
