International Cell Phones

Hope this is the right forum.

I plan on taking a trip to Ireland a littler later this fall. Looked into enabling my AT&T US based phone for international calling, international roaming/data, etc. Looks to be quite expensive. I thought it would/could be more affordable to buy a prepaid/disposable cell phone when I reach Ireland. While this prepaid phone may not be up to the same quality as my Samsung Galaxy II, I hope for it to do the trick.

Anyone know how much prepaid cells are in other countries (specifically in the UK or Ireland)? What's included with the prices? And what kind of phones can you buy (features - camera, data, etc.)?

Thanks all!

How long are you planning on being there? Just a week in a hotel and mainly for calling the US I'd settle for calling cards on a land-based phone or skype/similar voice app over WiFi on a smart phone/laptop. Several months I'd look at a prepaid as you have suggested (something like the equivalent of Boost mobile and the like). I know we have a couple from Ireland and plenty from the UK so I'm sure someone will have an answer for you on pricing...

For a long term option some phones are unlocked and you can buy a prepaid sim locally and use it in your phone, if your phone is not unlocked then you can get a prepaid phone. Pricing depends on what you want, you can get one that only calls and texts with a tiny screen for $20, or you can get a lower level samsung galaxy for $200, depends on what you are after and how much you are willing to pay
