Please refer to http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=188457 for Desktop Upgrade and why I created this new topic.

Well, I am living in Malaysia (Singapore if you dunno Malaysia) and it is summer all year long. A good CPU cooler is always needed.

However, I am going to studying in Tokyo University in March 2012.

(For those who are interested of knowing why, Japanese girls are hotter than USA chicks)

So anyway, I trusted Overclockers Club and had my PC Desktop built in December 2011.

Argh, I am gonna travel to Japan soon, my desktop is just a year old and capable of playing all games in ultra-high settings.

I do not know where should I post this topic, System Builds or Miscellaneous Hardware?

But one thing I am sure is System Builds had more supports and better response, while my topic is more related to 'Desktop Upgrades'.

But still, hoping to get some advice like should I get a new laptop?

Before anything, my budget is up to $3000 for new laptop and $500 for Desktop Upgrades.

This topic is focusing on discussing on which laptop should I buy IF I really decided to buy a new laptop instead of desktop upgrading.

Please go to http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=188457 to post advice and comments on desktop upgrading.

I had done some research and found out that Alienware produces the most high-end laptops in the world but it is just WAY too expensive.

So I had decided to see some other laptops.

I had always put my trust in ASUS more than Toshiba, Acer and HP.

So I did a futher research on Asus Laptops, feel free to post some recommendations or suggestions of other brands' laptops.

My budget is $3000 for new laptops.

Well, I had my eyes on these laptops:

Alienware M18x (Can't link it, it is linked to Dell)

Alienware M17x

Alienware M17x - $2,189 - 17.3" Screen Full HD (Well... it comes with 720 version too)

Intel® Core™ i7 2670QM 2.2GHz (3.1GHz w/Turbo Boost, 6MB Cache)

8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4DIMMS)

500GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s

17.3-inch WideHD+ 1600 x 900 60Hz WLED

Killer™ Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO for Gaming & Video

Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)

Add-On:

17.3-inch WideFHD 1920x1080 120Hz WLED w/ NVIDIA 3D Vision Bundle [Add $200.00] (3D Gaming? Hmm... sounds nice!)

16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4DIMMS) [Add $200.00] I do not think I need it)

1TB Raid 0 (2x 500GB Hybrid Solid State Drives) [Add $225.00] (I have an external 1.5Tb Samsung Story so I do not really need bigger space, but I also considered that external HD is very slow, but good for storage!)

256GB Solid State Drive [Add $400.00] (I guess I can consider on this for a good SSD internal combo with my already available external hard drive~)

View on Alienware:

1. Too expensive, some just do not make sense.

2. For example, it offers same processor at different prices, can't I just save money and overclock myself?

3. Another example, since it offers two slots for hard drives, can I get 1 256GB SSD (It adds $400) and buy another 256GB SSD from other stores and insert into it?! CAN I EVEN DO THAT? (It has two slots for GPU too)

The reason I think of buying another 256GB SSD and insert it later on is because the price for SSD will drop a year later and only a year later I would run out of space. Maybe can even consider for 516GB!

I personally think Alienware is great however overpriced.

Personal View: It is ugly but it is the latest Gaming Powerhouse series. And its screen is 17.3, it is okay.

I think in the end, it comes down to what do you plan to do with the laptop.

Are you going to just game with it? Or will you take it with you to university and take notes/work with it?
