CPU dropping in speed at 49C

Recommended Posts

For some reason while i am running prime95 when my cpu temp hits 49C, my cpu speed drops from 4ghz to 1.1ghz in cpu-z. Once the temp drops again, its goes back to normal. Anyone know if this is a safety feature which i can turn off in bios?

Here are my specs:

Any help would be great thanks!

Oh ya, i am using a Noctua NH-D14 as my cooling in a CoolerMaster Haf-X case.

Been reading around the [H]ard forums and found this thread which may be of help.

According to the thread, it seems that this problem may have something to do with your motherboard MOSFETs overheading, so the Asus motherboard throttles back your cpu as a safety feature.

Your motherboard supports CPUs which draw a maximum of 140W, your cpu has a TDP of 125W but with an overclock the power drawn would be significantly higher - so maybe this could be what's causing your motherboard MOSFETs to overheat.

EDIT: Made a sentence easier to understand

It's not a temperature issue, though it's related to it. From what I read about it, the Phenom II x6's have have their own Cool and Quiet (not exactly sure how that's different than the other Phenom II's). Many motherboards, notably ASUS boards, don't have that feature to be turned off unless you have the ASUS Crosshair IV series. In order to fix the issue, you need to download and use PhenomMSRTweaker. It works really well, but keep in mind, you'll want to put a fan to dissipate the heat that your NB produces. Here's a previous thread where I found out about it: http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=180086&st=24
