Strak Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Hello all, I'm doing a long overdue system rebuild, but I really want to keep costs to a minimum. I'm hoping to be able to overclock the system a bit, but I'm a complete overclocking newbie so I'd like a bit of advice on the hardware I've been looking at. I want the system to be fairly quick, but it doesn't have to be amazingly powerful. If it runs Unreal Tournament 3 well that would be nice These are the parts I've been looking at so far: Processor Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148715 Cooling Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 Processor Cooler http://www.ebuyer.com/product/105994 Mobo ASUS P5QL-E iP43 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149276 I also looked at this which is more in my price range really but then I steered away as it's mATX which always annoys me a bit - is that silly?: Asus P5B-VM AiLifestyle iG965 Socket 775 onboard VGA 8 channel audio mATX http://www.ebuyer.com/product/121201 RAM OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800Mhz/PC2-6400 Memory GOLD DUAL CHANNEL Unbuffered CL5(5-5-5-18) http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146049 Graphics Card Inno3D 9600 GSO Overclock 384MB GDDR3 Dual DVI HDCP HDTV out PCI-E http://www.ebuyer.com/product/147796 I'd appreciate any thoughts that people have on this spec Thanks a lot, Strak
kingdingeling Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 What's your overall budget for this rig? Also, you're missing a power supply, no?
MINDSCI Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Sysytem design looks good... But if you want to get into overclocking, this CPU does it extremely- like a banshee!- well & safely! It is also "future Proof" for at least a couple of years. However, it is twice as much as the E5200 but the CPU & MOBO are the most important elements in a good overclocking system. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139971 What about your Case and PSU? Strak Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Thanks for repying, I already have a fairly decent case from my old system, but I will be getting a new power supply. I had been thinking of this one, but do you think it's worth spending a bit more money?... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135198 I don't want to spend anymore than
kingdingeling Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Nooooo no no, you don't want to be doing that! Crappy PSU = can take out your whole rig if it blows! You don't need 500W, but you'll need to invest a little more than 25 Quid for a decent power supply. This Antec Earthwatts 380W for 33 Quid has enough power for that rig, it's a quality unit and is quite cheap as well. Before you say 380W is not enough, I had one of those Earthwatts 380W here until about 2 weeks ago, powering the rig in my sig minus one 8800GT! Strak Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Ok cool, I had seen that PSU but just assumed I needed a higher wattage! Does it run fairly quietly?
MINDSCI Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 The Asus P5QL being ATX gives you more expandability options for the future than the Micro-ATX MOBO.
Strak Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Cool, I think I'm gonna do a bit more research around the graphics card, but I'll probably go with this spec. Thanks a lot guys
kingdingeling Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 The 9600GSO is great value for the money! As for the PSU, the Earthwatts is relatively quiet, unless you run everything at crazy speeds with crazy overclocks at full load (=me)
Strak Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Bugger, not sure what I missed off yesterday, but everything adds up to
