Guest Blooz1 Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Yet another "subscription-based" PC idea - Linux based energy saver! http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/16/technology/16cheap.html Could be a viable alternative for the "computer challenged", not much to mess up, and saves electricity! Whaddya think?
dr_bowtie Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 might be an Idea for web surfers... I have my eye on those Via PC's that are the size of a business card.. That could really help me...just use 6 of those and hook them all via a network to my main rig (via router) and save alot of space and energy... waiting till they sell them to get some... EDIT: the Via based ones use .25watt idle and a max of 13watts
kccustom Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Its actually a $ 409.80 dollar computer if you add up the $99 plus the $12.95 a month 2 year contract, that is real close to a mac mini in price. Or you could buy the box outright for $249, I can't find if they supply a monitor. And it don't have a Hard Drive. * Intel-compatible ultra-low power CPU * 512 MB RAM + 4GB flash-based local storage * VGA graphics port (16 million colors). Hardware graphics and MPEG2 acceleration * PC-compatible ports for keyboard and mouse * 6 USB ports to plug-and-play all standard USB accessories * Broadband ready: 10/100 Mbps Ethernet built-in
Guest Blooz1 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Yeah, there's a "bait and switch" aspect to this rig to get it down to the $99 price point - no monitor, keyboard, mouse in that price. They seem to be relying on online storage to eliminate the HD and lower power consumption.
zkissane Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I don't know if any PC at $99 (or any "civilized") price will fly. Maybe if you took a pocket PC or something and strapped it to an R/C airplane it would count, but other than that, I doubt it. One could always try though. I was gonna say drop it out a 10 storey window and see... It either will or won't...
