having problems with opty and nf3 ultra

using pata drive, trying to use 2x512 patriot xblks but i seem to be having a problem, i flashed to C19 bios before installing the opty and i couldnt even get into windows, it would reboot soons it got into windows (@ stock clocks)... hooked up an opty that friend let me get and with the ram in the orange slots, same problem, couldnt get into windows. I disabled CPU throttling, and used 1 stick of the patriots in the yellow slot and boom, here i am right now in windows... but if i try and pop the second stick in, it locks.. mem is default at 1T... and i tried bumping up the voltage (cpu) to 1.400v (stock htt etc) and it wouldnt boot period, had to clear cmos.. 8/24 didnt work well for me with my venice, so im a little unsure about trying it again with the opteron... whachu guys think, will 7/11 work with an opty?

i got them both to work, screwy lol, i set the mem freq to 200 instead of auto, and 2T.. and im now in windows running 280x10... cpu vltg doesnt seem to be to accurate though as usual... 1.550 in bios, says 1.349 in cpu-z... also, i tried running the opty at what i was using for my venice, 300HTT x 8 multi, 3x LDT and for some reason it doesnt like 8x, or even 7x multi lol... itll say 360 HTT in bios, but in windows its 200 and cpu is only 1600mhz lol... ahh well , guess i can live with 10x multi <3

Hmmmm, before you give up on those sticks, you should know this is pretty common with C19 on the nF3 Ultra-D. C19 is very picky, and there are few settings that need to be manually set in the bios before you will get anywhere. Auto is just not an option like on nF4.

Here are a few suggestions that might get you started:

 

First off use the following procedure to do a proper CMOS clear. I would reccomend that you stick with C19 as it works best with opteron, with both sticks in the orange slots.

Also a few other things to be aware of...

 

This board under-volts VCORE (the CPU core voltage), if you are not using +0.x voltage adjust. If you are it overvolts. Check the table in the tweeks sticky attached, and use the tables to set the proper VCORE. When I started with my 3000+ venice I used the following which gives about 1.4v VCORE on my board.

 

CPU VID Control = 1.425v

CPU Voltage adjusting = +0.1v

- Also check your vdimm as it defaults to 2.6v which in many cases is too low. Bump it up to 2.7v and see if things improve.

- Make sure your SATA drives are on ports 3 or 4. The other SATA drive ports (1&2) are not locked.

- Set your AGP OverClock in MHz = 67 to lock the SATA bus. Otherwise the SATA bus is unlocked.

 

You will also need to find some stable stock settings for those sticks, or read the spd and other timings using A64 tweeker. I would suggest looking in the stock settings database or in the overclocking database (OCDB).

 

Start by setting the SPD manually, in the geni BIOS and test only with memtest86 on a bootable CDROM. Don't try and get into windows yet until you get memtest stable.

 

Next start coding the following in pairs in this order.

 

DDR DQ drive strength = 50% reduction

DRAM Bank Interleaving = Enabled

 

Max Asynchronous latency = 8ns

Read Preamble = 6ns

 

Row Refresh time (Trfc) = 16

Row cycle time (Trc) = 12

 

 

If you follow this and you still have errors in memtest, or cannot boot into windows then it may be more likely you have a bad stick.

im starting to think its undervolting myself.

 

"CPU Voltage adjusting = +0.1v" how come this is greyd out? i want to use this lol but i cant... i can only select CPU between 0.8 - 1.8 and right now im on 1.625 and it reads 1.504 in CPU-z, thinkin bout bumping it up a lil more

I had a few thoughts on this, but need to know what BIOS U are using

 

- Possibly you have the core voltage set too high and CPU Voltage adjust is not available to avoid seriously overvolting. Try lowering core voltage, and then adding CPU Voltage adjust.

- The BIOS version you are using does not have this feature. For example C19 does not have CPU Voltage adjust in geni bios. You can only adjust the core voltage.

Assuming you are still trying to get stock stable for now I would stay with this at this stage until you figure out where the instability might be. Later on try increasing vcore once you get some of these things sorted out to your liking. Also watch your temps, and if you have a multimeter measure your vcore instead of using bios or cpuz which are whak.

i am still currently using C19 bios. ( so cpu voltage is .800 - 1.850, no special, no addition +.(v))

im set to 1.65v on cpu and its showing as ~1.50 in cpu-z and mbm5 with the datafiles for nf3/4, and i also Redid my AS5 and it dropped 12c on load. currently running 2.7ghz @ 166 divider, 10x multi, 3x ldt, 2.9v ram, 1.75v chip, 1.6v agp @ 67 mhz, rams in yellow slots, and cpu throttling off and Drive strength @ 50% reduction... and im currently running torture test (large) and its passing so far its on the 3rd test. no random reboots/locking too :) ..... Using 1 HDD 80gb WD ATA100 .. was unable to get any SATA drives (using 1 only) to work properly, tried a maxtor 320gb 16mb cache maxline 3, didnt work so i sold it, tried a WD RE 250 gb 16mb cache, couldnt get that working either.... however i have not tried the WD again since the i was Using the Venice, if this ends up being stable, im going to re try using these c19 bios and maybe get lucky and have more than 80gb at my disposal =)

Thats what I suspected, the C19 bios does not enable the CPU Voltage adjust in the BIOS. I also had to set my CPU Volts quite high (1.575) just to get 1.42v vcore using a multimeter. Its a pain, I have learned to live with it. It looks like your on your way though so that is good news, and luck :)

 

As far as the SATA thing goes, search the tweeks sticky. There are some really good threads there regarding this. Its tricky, but if you leave your SATA until very last when you are done tweeking you can get it to work. Overclocking after that though can be interesting.

i know i remember reading a bunch of this stuff when the board first came out... so far ive accomplished this since my last post, 166 divider @ 1T :) , lower volts in bios to 1.6v = 1.42v in mbm5 and cpu-z, passed 3 tests so far =]!!!! as far as the sata thing goes, thats a PITA, and i know ur sposed to install @ defualt clocks, but id get further along in the installation WHEN OC'd then i would default lol... its crazy

Where in the world do you measure VCore on the LanParty NF3 Ultra-D? I'd love to do some meter-lead poking to see what my actual voltages on my CPU are at this moment! Thanks in advance!

Check this post, which describes this a bit. It looks easier than it is actually. There is very little room to get a probe in on one of the torroids without shorting things out, which is not good if you know what I mean. :mad:

To do this you will need to get your hands on a 3M micro probe-it clip on test lead, or something equivalant. I found mine at a local electronics supply I use here. They have a tiny wire gripper that retracts from inside the tip of the probe, that grips the lead without shorting everything out. Then you can measure vcore safely. :)
