AMD RTG Senior Vice President of Engineering Pledges New Graphics Products Yearly

Recommended Posts

Computex 2018 has ended now and neither AMD nor NVIDIA provided any specific information on whatever their next consumer-targeting GPU will be. NVIDIA even said it will be a "long time" before its next series and while AMD did show off a new GPU, it was the 7 nm Vega 20 going to Radeon Instinct compute cards. AMD President and CEO Lisa Su did state though that 7 nm gaming GPUs are coming, but did not say when or if she was referring to Vega or potentially Navi, the following architecture.

None of that is exactly good news if you are looking forward to an upgrade over what is currently available, but David Wang, the Senior Vice President of Engineering at AMD's Radeon Technology Group made a pledge that is encouraging. The promise is that AMD will be releasing new graphics products yearly, with these products representing a new architecture, process change, or "maybe incremental architecture changes." This plan is to provide some kind of consistency and continuing to stimulate the excitement for something new coming.

Wang also stated that he feels "AMD had lost momentum" in the consumer markets as effort was put into chasing after AI. Perhaps ironically, the Vega 20 Radeon Instinct GPU shown off at Computex 2018 is actually targeting AI workloads. Still, this statement shows an interest in returning focus to the gaming-side of GPUs we all enjoy.
