I've never been one to dismiss the "tofu-sucking, peace loving, idealistic hippy" viewpoints. A utopian society may be impossible, but then again, so is the other extreme. There will never be perfect order or utter chaos.
With that said, I do think it's very possible to improve the way the world is. As we grow in population, we're learning how to deal with eachother in new and better ways...and with the amazing, expanding interweb (since I'm new I should probably explain that that's a pet name) - information and knowledge are becoming increasingly more available to the average person. I hope that one day it will be fluid and free flowing, not completely of course. If we could know everything at one time, well, first of all, some may find that offensive for religious reasons, to even contemplate that humans could possess that sort of knowledge (re: Dr. Faustus), then again, it's not humanly possible to process that amount of information anyway.
I digress. Anyway, my point is this...although people will never be perfect, and there will always be negative and destructive entities present in the world, I think that knowledge (and the slow decline of ignorance -- I hope, I hope) will spread; we'll be able to manage the negative aspects of civilazation in a more effective and efficient manner.
It's still frustrating as all *insert curse word here* having to deal with the process though. To be brief, "mean people suck".
