  2. Hi guy's, have been reading this forum for about a year, trying to learn asmuch as i can, without drooling too much. I have tried overclocking a couple of times, without any succes, and over a number of years. The first time i tried was with an AMD x64 x2 +4400, on a Asus A8Ne. At that time i wasnt really interested in how the cpu and motherboard work, just wanted to get the most out of my money. This time round I have;- Intel Q6600 G0 Asus P5QL-Pro (bios 1004 A3) 4Gb DDR2-800 xFx 9600GT So i picked up a copy of this months CustomPC magazine, and in it there is a brief step by step walkthrough on what you need to change in the bios to overclock t Q6600 (among others). So i was reading it, and it cleared up some of the confusion i had in my head about the bios and how to overclock, so I thought to myself "lets crack this thing open an see what i can do". The article claims that you can go from 2.4GHz stock, to 3.4GHz on air cooling(with the use of a decent Heatsink & fan). At the mo, i'm using the standard intel h/s + fan, so didn't want to push it, I was aiming just to see if i could get a succesfull overclock because i can see myself spending some money on new hardware if i were not to FAIL. Anyway i followed the article, changed the Bus Speed to 340Mhz, changed the DRAM Frequency to 757Mhz(closest to the rated 800mhz of the ram) and upped the core voltage to a maximum of 1.300v. That gave me an effective clock speed of 3.07Ghz Booted into windows fine, ran coretemp and cpuz to confirm overclock and monitor temps through light use. All temps were well below 55' so was fairly happy with that. Just thought i'd put it under some usage, un-rar'ed 3gb archive, sweet, temps rose a deg or two. Then i thought id encode a film onto DVD, was running along quite hapily (and a lot quicker than it used to), temps were slowly creeping up. When they reached 65, i aborted, shutdown and reset everything in the bios and have decided to leave it stock untill i have read up and experimented a little more. Am going to read throught the article's on here regarding overclocking c2q. But I am going to ask for some advice and help here first so i can hopefully read through it all together and get a better idea of what i need to do. The questions I have are, and I'm sorry there's so many, What temp does everyone consider their "Redline" for their cpu. Does anyone have any experience overclocking using the motherboard i have, and if so what does everyone make of it, Overclocking purposes only. (personally dont like it, only cos i have been unsucsesfull at gettin OSx on it) Recommendations for a good heatsink Recommendations for a good LGA775 Overclocking motherboard
  3. Hey guy's, wonder if any of you can help me. First of all sorry if posted in wrong section, as it could be classed as motherboard issue. I've got a HTPC using a 8month old Foxconn 945G7AD-8EKRS2H motherboard. Last week i bought a brand new xFx 8400GS to fit into my HTPC, got it all set up working sound, was just fiddling around updating windows when i came to restart it started beeping at POST, one long beep followed by two short beeps, which according to the foxconn website means graphics issue. So as per usuall it wouldn't boot when beeping occurred, but wierd thing is, after a couple of hits on the reset switch it would boot. Have taken card out and reseated it, still the same, so have just taken the card out for now. Another wierd thing, a few months ago before i fitted the graphics card, when i was using the onboard vga, it has made this beep sequence but it was so infrequent, and it only took one hit of the reset button to get it to boot i didnt look into the problem. Before i start stripping multiple machines down to test the component's, does anyone have any suggestions as to any other reasons why this could happen. Many Thanks Iain
  4. Cheers for your responses guy's, the asus AN8-E doesnt have on board, and tried booting it with a new 9600GT and still nothing, is it worth buying a cheap mobo to see if the cpu still works, cos i quite like that chip, would make a very good server.
  5. Hi guy's nice forum here, think i could be hanging around here for a while........ Anywhoo, my old rig is as follows Asus AN8-E s939 1xPCI-e x16 AMD x2 4400+ never O/C'd 2Gb DDR Asus 7800GTX 256Mb I had a problem where by, sometime's, if i restart or turn on my comp the display would not kick in, the mobo turned on and had the usual sounds of booting up but the monitor was just 'no signal'. Then it happened perminetly. Stipped it down to test, and noticed that the fan on the Northbridge/Southbridge (dunno which one AMD's dont have) had burnt out and stopped working, checked the back of the mobo, an saw what looked to me like slight dis-colouration of the circutry on the back of the mobo where the Northbridge is. Initial assumption, Northbridge = Fried. Went out and bought Intel E2200, Foxconn P945-G7AD, 2Gb ram, set up, booted fine, went to install my 7800GTX, same problem as old rig........ Just wondering what everone's opinion on this is, dont trust local computer shop because i have showed more knowledge on hardware than they have, they sold me a cpu and mobo package, where the cpu wasn't compatable with the mobo. Wouldnt mind getting it up an running if i can, just found it odd that the old GFX card didnt work in my new system. Then the other week i went out an bought XFX 9600GT, works fine in new rig, old rig still no display when new card is installed. Oh yeah one more question, what CPU can you recommend to fit in my board, thats ok for gaming but not too expensive 100-150GBP.
