  1. Most of the stuff will come from newegg probably. Tried to get link but the info was emailed to me directly from newegg. He has already ordered the case and a monitor. You think he actually needs 64 bit? I'll give him this link so he can talk directly to you guys. Anyway thanks again for you prompt replies.
  2. Hi guys, A friend is building a new computer and wants to know about these parts and compatibility. What OS should be used? Will Windows 7 handle 8 gigs ram? He might eventually go sli or crossfire so the power supply needs to have dual card plugs. Rosewill BLACKHAWK Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case SAMSUNG CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-222AB $17.99 Thermaltake TR2 RX 750W Bronze W0382RU Power Supply $114.99 - Intel Core i5-2500 3.3GHz LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core --- quad core actually necessary? Ever use all 4? Perhaps a cheaper fast i3. Stick w/ HIGHEST clock speed you can afford Western Digital Caviar Black500GB 3.5" SATA --- good, but WD Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s OEM is cheaper. EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 560(Fermi) 01G-P3-1461-KR Video Card GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3 ATX Intel > G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) --- w/ 8GB make sure use 64 bit OS. Again fastest may not be noticeable. I thought Intel chipsets used ram in triple [6GB=3x2GB] now not pairs. Maybe that's earlier boards but better check. Does the mobo need a bois update for this CPU? Any way thanks in advance for your help again guys.
  3. I've got a sata 502ij samsung (actually two) on a Gigabyte EP45-ud3p and XP Pro. I had a crash and reformatted after Killdisk did it's thing. Here's the problem............There is now a 13meg partition that I cant get rid of. Before the reformat it was 7.99megs. This was my 2 partition OS/Games drive. It is now one partition with the small unallocated space that I cant get rid of. I've used both Partition magic and Gparted. What could it be (MBR?) and how to delete it if needed? Second question....I have searched for 2 weeks for head/cylinder data for this drive and can't find it anywhere. Anybody have any ideas where I can get the data? There are no markings on the label. Would boot times be reduced by manually mounting it in bios as opposed to autodetect? Third.......What is the math used to determine size? Head X cylinder X Sectors= size? Fourth.....After setting it up, should it be set up as ACHI (?) or IDE? Fifth.......What is a good hex editor that gives good easily readable data? Anyway thanks in advance for your help and info.
  4. Me again. After looking at pricing I found out that the Duorb is made for both CPU and GPU cooling (with a $20 price difference). Just a clarification of things.
  5. The duorb is for CPU cooling. The only reason I chose it is Maximum PC mag stated it was the best as to size/weight/efficiency. An added factor, if I decide to burn up my CPU, I mean overclock , it should handle the cooling ok. Everyone more or less agrees on all but the video card, so it comes to personal preference. I have always been an Nvidia fan, but I've kinda decided to "broaden my horizon" a little. As far as the quad chips go, I don't see an advantage for them as the software vendors have yet to fully embrace the dual cores. The bad news is, in three years we will be having this conversation again. And again you guys are WAY to helpful. That is meant as a compliment.
  6. Here's what I settled on at about $1020 not counting MIR. The case and optics aren't listed because I haven't decided yet. Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3p Wolfdale e8400 OCZ Reaper 4g (2X2)DDR2 1066 Sapphire 4870 X2 Samsung Spinpoint F1 500gig HD (X2) PC Power & Cooling S75cf 750w Thermaltake Duorb Are there any major flaws in my plan? Any stupid mistakes? Any changes you would suggest? Can this system be pushed to 3.8 on air? Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
  7. Another quick question. The gigabyte GA-EP45 board shows support for crossfire but not SLI, but you recommended the GeForce Black. Should I stick with my original 4870 or change mobos? I would like the option to dual card in the future if needed.
  8. I've got a 20" dell lcd @1600X 1200, but next month my $300 goes to a monitor. Any suggestions? All you have to say is"Dips***, you ask too many questions." But really, thanks for the MANY quick responses. Side note: Have you guys seen the 180 degree monitor they are developing? You sit in the middle and it wraps around you. I saw a picture on Biohazardclan.com forum under Christmas present or something like that. Thanks again for your suggestions and time.
  9. Hello everyone. I'm new to your site and as such, would like a few recommendations for hardware for a new computer. I have about $1400 to spend. The only real decisions I have made are a 3.0 Wolfdale (or better)and ATI Radeon 4870. Everything else is open for suggestion. I need EVERYTHING!!! This will be a games-only rig and I'm not looking for super over-clocks. I might try to OC the Wolfdale to 3.8 later (if possble). What memory? Mobo? Sound? I'm kinda leaning toward a XTreme Gamer. Case? Cooler? Power supply? I believe it's best to overkill on the power, up to a point. Hard drive? Optics? I also would like your recommendations on a good router that is compatible with the Sprint 595 USB modem. This is the only highspeed internet available in my area so I'm stuck with it. Thanks in advance for your help and please don't say google it. I have done enough research to narrow my picks. I just want to make sure my picks jibe with the picks of people who really know their business. Thanks again.
