  1. Wow, thanks very much. I did exactly what you wrote, and the folder is now gone. To be honest, I was very much expecting to see the Windows.old folder still there after I did what you wrote because I had already tried deleting the folder using different commands in cmd.exe and none of had them worked. Anyway, my problem is solved, and hopefully I won't encounter any problems or issues because of the folder deletion. I will post back if I do. Thanks again.
  2. I already successfully activated my Windows 7 though.
  3. Hello. I have searched for this problem online and I have tried some of the recommended solutions, but none of them have worked for me. Using an upgrade disc, I clean installed Win 7 Pro 64 bit over my previous version of Windows, which was Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Once it was installed, I manually deleted my Windows.old folder (by right clicking and choosing Delete). I think the 'proper' way to delete this folder might be to use disk cleanup and enable 'Previous Windows Installation(s)'. In any case, everything was deleted from that folder except the folder itself and some directories, namely everything in this path: C:\Windows.old\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\SecuROM. When I show hidden files, there are two files with long names in weird characters. I cannot delete the Windows.old folder or any folders within it or those 2 hidden files. Whenever I try to delete any of those, the same message always comes up: "Item Not Found". Does anyone know or have any idea of how to fix this? It's not a HUGE issue obviously, but I just want it gone. Any help would be appreciated.
  4. lol, yeah, but I think it came out pretty good, no? I kinda would have liked to get a better motherboard, but that one seems decent enough.
  5. I already ordered the 4650 (see build below), but those cards were out of my price range anyway. I'm sure they beat the 4650, but I just couldn't afford them, given my total budget. Those are both great deals; I probably should have gone for that 4670, but I didn't read your post until after I ordered. I ended up getting a Sapphire 4650 (see below) for $45 ($10 off with Windows 7); it got pretty good reviews though, so I'm not too worried. Thanks everybody for all your input, some of which I incorporated into my final decision. I have already ordered the parts, and they are on the way to my house. This is the build: $105 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM $70 OCZ Fatal1ty 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Modular Active PFC Power Supply - OCZ550FTY - Retail $62 ASRock AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - M3A770DE - Retail $59 AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail $55 SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Low Profile Video Card - 100253HDMI - Retail $55 G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - F3-10600CL8D-2GBHK - Retail $55 SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - HD502HJ - Bare Drive $55 Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail $29 LITE-ON Black SATA CD/DVD Burner - iHAS124-04 - OEM $10 Microsoft Black 3 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical Mouse - N71-00007S - OEM $7 LITE-ON 2-Tone 104 Normal Keys PS/2 Wired Standard Keyboard - SK-1788/BS - Retail Including shipping, this comes out to $569, and if I get the $25 rebate for the PSU, that comes out to $544. 1 Question: Does the RAM type of the video card need to match the memory standard of the motherboard? In other words, will that video card not work in that mobo because of the RAM, or are they unrelated? I was also concerned about the card not fitting in the motherboard, but I will probably just have to wait and see about that. Worst case, I can always just order that 4670, lol.
  6. Thanks to everybody who posted. I have read all your posts, and I have followed multiple of your guys' suggestions. Here is what I have (hopefully this is the final check, because I would like to order the parts today): CPU: $59: Amd Athlon II x2 240 Regor 2.8 GHz : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103688 Mobo: $55: ASRock K10N78M AM3 GeForce 8100 Micro ATX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813157160 PSU: $70: ($45 after rebate) OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ55FTY 550W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817341022 RAM: $83: G.SKILL 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 (PC6400) 240-pin: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231122 Video Card: $45 with OS: Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102829 The keyboard, mouse, DVD Burner, OS, and hard drive are the same. Including shipping, and if the $25 rebate for the PSU comes through, this package totals $502, which is very good, considering my stated price goal. Of course, I have to buy a case still, but like I said, I can get a $40 one at Compusa, and $40 over isn't too bad. So, will this new combination of parts (mobo+PSU+RAM+video card+CPU) work? I have never dealt with a micro ATX mobo... is there any difference besides the size and less features (I presume)? Will the vid card fit? As far as the vid card, maybe my OP was misleading. My friends are not PC gamers. It would be nice if they could run a game or 2, but I am more concerned with them being able to run Win7-64 fine and watch videos, etc. They can always invest in a better vid card later if they want.
  7. You can do a clean install using the upgrade disk, but that is only if you have Windows installed already. It is a clean install in the sense that you wipe out your hard drive (or at least the partition with the OS on it), but you still need a version of Windows installed on the computer in order to do that. In my case, my friends don't have a computer, so it doesn't apply. But thanks anyway. Also, I looked on both the Corsair site and the Asus site, and neither compatibility list reports that the RAM will work with this motherboard. Does anyone, by chance, have this exact combo of RAM and mobo working? I would really like to stay with this ram and mobo because they are priced well, well-reviewed, have characteristics that I like, and they are part of good combo deals... so if someone can let me know if this RAM will definitely work, I will greatly appreciate it. Thanks. Well, supposedly it can play some games decently. My friends aren't really gamers, but I would like them to have the option of at least trying a game or 2 if they want to... they can always upgrade to a more expensive vid card later if they really want it. I just want something's that not crap. Oh, and this vid card is $25 off with the RAM I listed, and it comes with a free COD4 download. And I can't afford to add anything really. As it is, the last list totals to $555 including shipping. This is without the case, which I plan to get for $40, but minus a $30 rebate for stuff from Newegg, that comes to $565 (this is acceptable because the mom said she'd give me a bit more if needed, but I don't want to push it).
  8. Thanks for the help so far guys. I want to order the parts today ASAP so that the parts can get here in time and so that I can begin to build and set up this PC. Here is the new and different system I have in mind (some parts are the same): Lite-On SATA DVD Burner: $29 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827106289 Corsair CMPSU-550VX 550W PSU: $70 after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139004 Same mouse and keyboard: combined price of $17 MS Win7 64-bit OEM: $105 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16832116754 AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8 GHz AM3: $44 with mobo below http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103688 Asus M4A79XTD EVO AM3 790X ATX Mobo: $110 after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131402 XFX GeForce 9500 GT 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI-E2: $40 with ram below http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150322 Corsair XMS3 DHX 4GB (2x2GB) 240-pin DDR3 1600:$95 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145200 I noticed that any mid-tower case will add at least $15 to the shipping costs, so I'll just buy a cheap case from my local CompUSA (I saw a CoolerMaster Elite 330 for ($40). I am rather satisfied with all of the products, because they all have pretty good reviews, and I am personally familiar with Corsair RAM and PSU's, so I am not worried about those at all. I only have 1 question: 1. Will this system work (same question as last time)? In particular, I am concerned about the RAM complying with the mobo and the mobo fitting the RAM and the vid card. I believe the vid card is a "low-profile" card, but I have no idea what that means... do I have to buy some kind of bracket or something to fit that vid card into that mobo or does it have something to do w/ the case? Thanks.
  9. Well, it would be nice if they could play games like Left 4 Dead 2, Battlefield 2, Resident Evil 5... just most modern games in general... again, they don't need to get great FPS but it would be ideal if they could at least play them with tolerable FPS, even if it's at low settings. Thanks. Will do. I think you are right about AMD, based on the price at least; I really know nothing about their sockets. I'm under the impression that LGA775 for Intel might be outdated soon (what with the i5 and i7 sockets now in place)? So is the AM3 something that might last longer than 775? Very good; thanks for reminding me that it's just an upgrade. I bought it recently for myself, knowing that it would work, but that's because I have Vista installed. That was just an oversight; thanks a lot for pointing that out. Yeah... I just came back from CompUSA to see if I could find any better prices (and I didn't), and I realized there that I forgot to include a DVD drive. I'll get one for about $30. Thanks. Looks good. I like that there is some money left in that configuration for me to work with.
  10. Hello. I am building a computer for my friends for Christmas. My budget is $500 (their Mom gave me a check... I'm not THAT good of a friend, lol). Anyway, I intend to build the computer myself so that I get more for her money. Hopefully I don't receive any parts DOA. Basically, I want to build them a computer that is reliable, decent for gaming (can at least run most modern games, not with great FPS, but at least playable), and with the possibility to upgrade if need be. This is what I have in mind. Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8 GHz Dual-Core LGA 775 OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2x2GB) 240-pin DDR2 1066 RAM If I buy these together, and after a rebate, I can get them for $192: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.304839 hec X-Power Pro 600W Crossfire/SLI Ready hec 6C28BB8S Black Steel Mid Tower Case I get these together for $72 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.303315 Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L LGA 775 P45 Intel Motherboard $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128372 Microsoft N-71 3-Button Optical Mouse $10 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16826105026 Lite-On SK-1788 Keyboard $7 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16823107120 BFG Tech GeForce 7900GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI-E SLI-ready Video Card $40 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814143070 Western Digital Caviar Blue 320 GB 7200 RPB Hard Drive $48 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136098 Total comes out to $520 on Newegg, including shipping. But I get $40 total in rebate, so that brings me to $480 eventually, which leaves me almost enough to account for the $30 student discount version of Win7 Home Premium that I intend to somehow purchase for them using THEIR student email account, lol... that will be some kind of mission. Anyway, I'm interested in primarily 3 things. 1:Will this system work? I mean, are all the parts compatible? I believe they all are, but I just want to make sure. 2: Is this a good system in terms of decent gaming, reliability (the parts won't crap out and should physically last for a while unless abused and/or neglected), and upgrade-ability (mostly concerned with the Mobo/CPU here... but I don't really think I can afford a better CPU for a $500 build). 3: Are there any better deals you can think of for any of the parts or any other combos I might want to consider? Notice that there is no monitor. I will just give them my old 17in. CRT... I think that's the only option at this point, because fitting in a monitor seems out of the picture. I also will give them some old speakers if they don't have any. Thanks in advance for any help and input.
  11. Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I wasn't sure either way, if the compound should be replaced or not just to replace it. I guess I wasn't sure if the compound wears out from heat over time or something? I have no idea how the stuff works. I guess I won't replace it unless I happen to replace my heatsink, CPU, or if I want to remove my current heatsink to clean it. Thanks for the advice guys.
  12. Thanks for the response. Do you think the temps might start to noticeably increase in a year or 2? Should I change the thermal compound even if the temps don't increase? I figure that it wouldn't hurt to reapply the compound every year or so, assuming that I don't apply it worse than it was on before. But, then again, maybe there's no good reason to do so unless the temps increase? By the way, thanks for your post on how to build a computer. I used it (and added some of my own steps) and am very happy with the computer that I built, which is working very well.
  13. As the title question reads, when should I reapply thermal paste to my CPU if ever? I built my PC in mid June 09. I have a core i7 920 and a Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V cooler. I used AS5 thermal compound. I think I am getting pretty good idle temps: according to RealTemp, my 4 cores are currently idling at 46 44 47 and 38 respectively (I never quite understood why the 4th core was so lower... makes me wonder if the thermal paste spread unevenly and if I can achieve similar low temps for the other cores)... it also reports that my lowest temps have been 39 36 39 29. Anyway, my question is really this. Assuming that I am achieving what seem to be good idle temps, when might I want or need to reapply thermal paste to my CPU? Does it start to wear out after time? How much time? How do I know? Just by looking at the temps? Finally, as a tangent question related to my parenthetical comment earlier, is it at all unusual that my 4th core is about 9-10 degrees lower than my 1st and 3rd cores? Might this suggest I can achieve similar temps with the other cores if I reapply thermal paste now? Thanks.
  14. Oops, sorry. I simply misread your post; I have a 932, not a 922. I have no idea about the 922
  15. I have a Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V fitting just fine in my HAF 932. And all 4 stock case fans are installed comfortably as well.
