  1. thanks medianOCer. Flashed the bios ok to latest, still not getting very far on overclocking though. I've got it to 2362MHz (10.5x225) and everything runs ok but an error message occurs on prime05 after 56mins. I then dropped to 2300MHz just to see if how that would go under prime95 but I still got errors. If I drop the speed anymore it will be hardly worth oc'ing it OC'ed graphics card thought with excellent results (much easier for a noob) P.S - still using the same fan that came with the volcano.
  2. cool, I'll follow orders and post back soon Your officially my Mr (or in your case Miss) Miyagi! Is there any wax on wax off to be done mistress?! 01:24 here, time for bed!
  3. WOW, what a response! Thank you, I'll now try and provide all the requested details. A little background first. I tried to oc my last pc and didn’t get very far so I upgraded. I made sure this time I got a oc friendly MB, plenty of fans etc so that when this pc starts to struggle I can oc and prolong the upgrade a bit. My PCs not stugglering just yet but I’m thinking I should learn now anyways as I should be making the most of what I got. OK so first off my bios version. It reads, 11/27/2003 - nvidia - nforce - 6A61BD4EC-00. I know this is old but its been fine until now as not oc’ed.Any bios you recommend or is it just a case of getting the latest? Second, info from memory (running dual channel), they read, 1st stick front - corsair VS512MB400 783-0503023-0-039965. Back VS32MB-S PS1300503. 2nd stick - exactly the same apart from .......783-0503023-0-039964 Ok since taking my first steps into oc’ing (first post) I though I'd start from scratch as there were more pressing issues I had to address if going to learn to oc properly, mainly the CPU temp which was WAY too high at CPU stock speeds. Even tho I have a Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12, my idle temp was 50c! Its always run hot but this has not been a problem as I haven’t attempted to oc until now. I have the fan running at 3479RPM and I knew the heat sink and fan were position ok but to make sure I have since removed both the fan, chip etc, cleaned all, reapplied AS5 and the temp has now dropped SLIGHTLY to 45c idle. This is wrong, right? Shouldn’t I be getting much lower temp than this with this cooler? So far I understand FSB, multiplier, CPU voltage increases and since my last post I have been reading up on memory oc’ing and I now understand about the FSB ratio, ie 1:1, 5:4 etc. What I don’t understand is the timings, what each one does and how you know what setting to use (although I have found them in the bios now – thx medianOCer – I’ve been transfixed on the genie bios settings  So with my temps at an all time low (and still rubbish) I’m back to tweaking and testing. This is where I’m up to… 2363MHz (10.5x225) v1.80 – slower clock speed than my first oc attempt but produces better benchmark results. Windows and progs run but when I try the tests using prime95 and OCCT, errors occur within the first seconds  I’ll learn slowly but surely and I appreciate all the help you peeps are providing!
  4. ok cool but I really have no understanding of the timing you talk about. Have do I see the timing in the bios? Soz if this is a lame questions, if so maybe you could point me in the right direction to learn about timings. I have searched but only come across oc instructions to do with FSB and the multiplier.
  5. thx guys. I really don't understand the ram timing at the mo but as soon as I find a guide on this I will read up. At present got it running 12x200 - 1.80v which is stable. Tried the other way (decrease multiplier and increase FSB) but found that to be too unstable. 200MHz isn't to be grumbled at but I thought I would be able to get more than this, but after reading around it would appear to be the limit (for most newbies like me).
  6. soz, corsair 3200, 550PSU. Not sure bios no. where can I find that? All I need to know for now was what sort of speed I could expect to take the 3200+ XP Barton up to, ie 2400MHZ, 2500MHZ etc. Never even knew about mobile cpu until I came on here and saw a load of you have it - as I say complete newbie to oc so forgive me.
  7. Hello OK so I've spent all day trying to learn how to overclock but not having much success. Heres my set up.... 3200+ XP Barton DFI Lanparty NF II Ultra B 2x Corsair VS512MB400 Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12 Just so I have a baseline to aim at, what sort of speed should I be able to oc to with this CPU?
