Ok, so over the weekend I installed the Thecus NAS to our router. I have setup some of the stuff including the Raid Configuration. I went with a Raid 5 and stripe size 128bit. Also, I setup the FTS so that we can create a file on the network place so that stuff can be backed up on. Now heres the question. The Thecus came with Drive Clone5 Pro. I installed it on my computer and am backing up my computer. But I need to setup the servers to backup to the Thecus and I need the users to be able to backup specific material directly to the NAS. However, it seems that the software provided with this unit is only limited to a single computer? What options do I have available to setup the servers to backup to the NAS? Should I have installed the Driver Clone5 Pro onto one of the servers instead? Recap of what I need to do: Backup servers to NAS and setup all user computers to backup regularly. Do I need the Driver Clone5 Pro software or can this be done differently? thANK

Nemo, what commercial online backup service do you recommend and how much in pricing do those go for on a monthly or yearly basis? As for the NAS Unit, I took it out, took the time to look at the device and look through the quickstart guide which i found to be somewhat vague. so i went to the Thecus website and printed out their user manual for the N4100pro. I have it in a binder dedicated for the NAS unit and am reading it before i go attaching it to our router. Which brings me to the question. with the three servers I have, portalserver being the one which most of the applications are run in, or do i download the cd onto my office computer and work through the webbrowser module through that?

so another update, today we received the NAS unit, I am normally happy with newegg, however they seem to have cheapened their overall packaging quality. as i received the unit in its box, and not inside another (newegg logo) box like most vendors do. so, any joe schmoe could have easily opened it and handled the device without anyone ever noticing. just not my cup of tea when mechandise comes like that. anyways, i opened it up and looked at it and put it in the server room, i am not touching it and setting it up until i have the time to spend on doing that, probably next week. As a side note, I have signed up at my local college for "Essentials of A+" hopefully I can get myself certified by the end of next year and be able to have my salary raised as this is a benefit to the company, having someone trained who can manage multiple aspects of the business versus a just dedicated IT department. thanks

yeah, but that being said, i doubt i can get him to think like that. i was hoping that i could do a cheap solution, getting him a smaller portable Harddrive and backing it up. but than again thats still pointless because you could only backup once in awhile, while he seems to want it backed up on a constant bases. /sigh lol, hes a strange individual and unfortunately i have to handle this situation. Ok, so update. I received the 4 1TB hdds. now my boss is asking me to buy more hdds, so that he can pull the hdds after they get flashed with all the stuff and keep at his house. this sounds funny, i agree. but i think I could just setup his home computer and run the NAS as an FTP server and send him the backup'd information to his home computer? so NAS backup > backup image to his home VRS flashing some hdds and him taking those home. lol this is wierd. but i have to ask, to see what anyone would suggest. thanks. btw quote for running the hardwire dilema is 150 bucks. i need to see if anyone else can beat that price now, lol.

Cool thanks for the clarifcation, now also, from an equipment stand point will our machine that we use to look at the doctors equipment has to have all of the software accordingly to be able to do this. so perhaps, I will purchase a comp populate it with the appropriate software and set it up to be the only machine that has the authorization to access the files from the NAS. thanks for everything this is helping out tremendously. I cant wait till we receive the NAS unit.

I was thinking about that last night; but he wants a new computer with win7 and with backwards compatibility to WinXP, I need to find out if he also wants the new computer in order to upload all of the software that the doc is using on his. I will ask, but that is a good point. BTW I cant wait to read your review on the Thecus N4100Pro, as the NAS comes with driverclone 5 pro software, which by you mentioned those 2 software programs, so does this mean that basically I can put any form of software to work with the N4100pro? I am abit concerned about how the NAS is supposed to act. I want it to backup all of our data safely and securely. but at the same time will it be able to act as a FTP server as you mentioned above? and how will that affect the overall HD space available? As for raid 5 array , that gives you about 3TBs of the 4TBs installed right? whereas the Raid 10 gives you only 2TBs of the 4TBs available due to the Mirroring and Striping configuration of it?

I have a new question - hopefully it will not stray from the original topic - but anyways: Here is the new task handed down to me by my boss. We have a Doctor in Philly doing clinical research for our product, my boss wants to buy a computer (dell) and he wants me to setup such that the computer in Philly will save periodically and then send it over to the computer in our office in florida. So that we can monitor the Doctor's work. - and before anyone say anything the Doctor knows that we will be setting up for this to happen as the machine he uses is our property. So basically doctor write/saves work on his computer in Philly, we want to be able to see this through our computer in florida. my theory on this, is for me to have his connected to our network than have his system setup to backup files to the same computer that we will be using to monitor the progress. your thoughts or perhaps if someone can lead me in the right direction so i can set this up, i would gladly like this. Also, the boss wants the machine we buy to have Win7 with backwards compatibility to WinXP. Thank.

So, I purchased a Thecus N4100Pro for the server room and 4 Seagate 1TB 7200 RPM HDDs, to setup my backing up needs to a raid 10 configuration, unless anyone has any other suggestions. One question, if i want to open up a file that has been backup will it open up without needing to be extracted? i.e. does this device or will any NAS just save automatically or can it be configured in the manner it saves, so as to allow for users to pull/look for files they are needing? I wanted to know, if there are any good books out there, that might be a good read on this subject? I have been looking and there is one called "Mastering Windows 2003 Server" and another called "Mastering Microsoft Exchange Server 2003" are either of these books good for what I need as far as understanding and being able to get my self up to date on some techniques? Shibby - unfortnately the building management company is very hard on its rules, since we would be going over other offices and around the elevator shaft, they want us to hire a professional. If it were up to me, I would do it myself, but there are rules that are enforced by the building and there is no way for us to go around them. i agree a hardwire would be the best bet; however, there could be chance in the near future were we might actually be moving as we seem to be outgrowing the office. I am thinking we might either scrap the idea altogether.

I might have miscommunicated myself. We have an office suite in a building that is not ours, we also have a secondary smaller suite that we hace convertered into a storage unit which is where the remote desktop sits. I do have to get premission from the management company that maintains the building, within the confines of our office that would not be the case; however, since the second office suite is not directly connected, we would have to hire a technician who is state cert. and insured and get approved by the management company so that the wire could be run across. I want to see about setting up wireless; but, I fear that there will be to much singal clouding because of what is located between our main office and the second office (storage unit). I might even tell him that we should scrap the idea all together; however, he wants to install a security camera to monitor the storage room. Thank

Thx shibby; however, i am located in the US. as for your question about why I just do not do it, i am not sure at this moment the policy the building we are in have regarding non building management personal throwing wiring through the ceiling, I have to find out what we can do and what will be the most cost efficent and effective route. I want to know if it will be easier just hiring someone to run the wires, or if a wireless router will do the job, i am just concerned regarding the connect from our office to the storage room how the storage room will not receive the proper singals.

Ok, I still have some more researching to do in regards to ip addresses and the sort and knowing what these machines are doing. and another question... I have a computer that is not in our office, it is in our storage room which is in the same building and on the same floor. We do not have it connected to the server and it does not have a wireless pci card to allow it to try and connect to our network; however, I am not sure if it is going to be sucesseful to setup a wireless relay from the storage room to our office. (we use the storage room for some inventory and for shipping purposes) I am thinking that with the elevators and all of the walls that the signal would have to go through, that I do not think we will be able to achieve this. Although a mobile drive could be one solution, i fear that the cost out weight the solution. I even thought that perhaps it might just have to be wired and hiring a company to run the wires from our router to the computer in the storage room. again any thoughts?

OK here is a list of details: Router is a 3COM model 5012 Leviton CAT 5E IBDN Patch Panel CAT 5 UPS Unit by DCM and a power unit from Ativa we have three servers Portal Server Dell PE 800 Data Center Dell PE1400SC Exchange Server Dell PE 1900 which currently has a Seagate FreeAgent external hdd as a backup. Additionally there is an Iomega 2TB backup unit in the owners office, which I believe is attached as well to the exchange server. What he wants and likes is how the software on the seagate is user friendly. And as for the Data center he wants to retire it because he says it has one harddrive that everyone is using for file sharing and that he wants to take an imprint of that information and put it on a backup hdd. And, because it is old. But here is my question, should it have been the datacenter to be used as the backup server with multiple hdd(s) setup in a raid config? I do not know if the servers have stactic IP address, but if i were to look at their ip address, is there anyway to know if it is static or not? or does that have to be manually looked on the computer? With the following setup and the information provide, where should I even begin. I mean I would think that I should put the points toward a NAS unit first and then move from that point as a starting point, any thoughts? thanks J Also, i believe that we will be in major trouble if the sprinklers go off because a fire, since there is a sprinker in the server room...I have been reading several articles that suggest to make it a priority to get a different fire surpression system in the server room, any thoughts?
