Previous reports have indicated that the upcoming AMD Fiji XT GPU core will use first generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). It is now being reported that the Fiji XT can be modified to also support HBM2, though it remains unclear how much effort this would require. Both memory technologies use a 1024-bit interface with two prefetch operations per IO. HBM1 provides 128GB of bandwidth per second while HBM2 can offer up to 256GB per chip. Cards that use HBM1 will be able to support 8GB of memory per card while HBM2 doubles capacity to 16GB.
