new to over clocking

i just got some computer parts for free ssd hard drive and an msi p43-c51 mobo so i put my out dated e8400 in with 8 gbs of dual channel ddr3 and an after market cpu cooler so i could over clock becuase i cant afford anything new. i managed to get 3.7 ghz out of stock power settings but i cant get anything higher then that no matter what i try i want to break 4ghz does anyone hae any ideas on what my settings should be?
