Neon427 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) Hey guys! The Specs: PSU: 750W Corsair CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz (Stock) Mobo: EVGA 750i SLI Memory: 8Gb Patriot @ 800MHz (Stock) GPU: EVGA Ge-Force 8800gt Heatsink: Cooler Master V8 (Arctic Silver Thermal Paste) Case: Cooler Master HAF-932 Monitor: Everest Ultimate Stress Tester: Prime 95 The Problem: I'm having trouble getting this thing to go past 2.73GHz stably. Either the system locks up and a hard restart is required or I'm not comfortable with the temperatures that Everest is reading. Right now the system's default settings and temps @ 2.66GHz are: CPU Core: 1.350V CPU FSB: 1.200V Mem: 1.900V NF200: 1.200V FSB: 1333MHz Mem: 800MHz Multiplier: 8x LDT Frequency: 5x Idle Temp (Everest): ≈ 32-35 C Load Temp (Everest): ≈ 48 C I'm not an expert on overclocking by any means but I know that I should be able to push it further than it's letting me go right now. It's at 2.66GHz, and I know it can do better than that with my setup. I would really appreciate any advice anyone can offer. I've read that people have gotten upwards of 3.0GHz on setups close to mine and was hoping to get there myself. Does this sound unreasonable? Thanks in advance! I've been running an E6320@3Ghz for about a year now without any issues. I just noticed that my screen capture is of the CPU speed when stepped down by Speedstep but it is running perfectly stable at 3Ghz. I would take another screen capture but I had to RDP in to it as I'm at work and don't want to fire it up again to do so.
Neon427 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) That's what I thought, take a look. What am I doing wrong? Edited February 21, 2011 by Neon427
Water_Hazard Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 When you overclock your cpu through the FSB, you are also overclocking your ram. Try lowering your ram multiplier so you have a little more headroom to overclock the cpu.
Neon427 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Well as I currently have it running, the FSB is unlinked with my memory, as set in the BIOS. I'm trying to up the FSB while keeping the mem at 800MHz. Are you saying I should lower the mem frequency so as to have more room in the FSB? Water_Hazard Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Are you sure it is keeping your memory at 800MHz? It just sounded like a memory problem to me. I use to have an EVGA 750i FTW mobo and E5200 cpu and it would do 3.1ghz at stock voltage, that's why I was thinking memory. I would overclock a little and make sure your Memory isn't being overclocked too.
krazypoloc Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I had issues when I added a new kit of memory last week. Added a 4GB kit of DDR2 800 and it wouldn't run stable at 800Mhz regardless of voltage. I had to lower it down to 750Mhz and it is perfectly stable now. I am chalking it up to a weak memory controller. Try and bumping the memory down to 600Mhz while you try and find the highest possible clock speed for the CPU. This is a common method for finding the sweet spot for all your clocks and you should have done this already.
Neon427 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Just as a point of curiosity, what kind of temps should I expect to be seeing with the V8, if ambient room temp is roughly 30C. You were right about the memory being OC'd with the FSB. Apparently even in the "unlinked" mode it was trying to overclock the mem as well. I'm running prime, and it looks ok right now. The default voltage it keeps trying to put on my core is 1.55V, I dropped it down to 1.32V and the temps are much better than before. under load it's going between 50-53C, if it's stable, I'll lower the voltage a little bit and try getting some more out of it at the lower voltages. Thanks for you help guys, I really appreciate it!
