F@TMAN Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I've been having interesting issues with my desktop lately (see sig), and wanted some advise about my options. I'm well aware of the reputation these sticks have of dying, and as much as I'd like to hurriedly RMA them in order to get some new sticks, I want to hear from some user experiences as to whether or not Crucial have overcome these issues that plagued z503 IC's, and will my replacement set be using them, or whether it may just be simpler to purchase different memory. Cheers PS: Here are details for my current set Batch: CL1115N.2R Part #: 56278 BL12864Z503.16TD
Kingfisher Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I've been having interesting issues with my desktop lately What issues exactly? Does your PC boot? Did it used to boot and now doesn't? Blue screens, screen freeze, random re-starts? What RAM timings are you using, what voltage?
F@TMAN Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Appreciate your efforts, Kingfisher, if you're really keen on having a look check this thread: http://www.diy-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=77033 Having said that, these problems are occurring @ stock timings and Vdimm but DDR400 speeds...for RAM rated @ DDR500 to give an error in Memtest, that sounds rather weird doesn't it? I'd rather RMA and try my luck with a new kit. Cheers
Kingfisher Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Memtest errors does not and 99 % of the time are not caused because the RAM sticks are bad. DFI boards, particularly the series you have, need to have the RAM manually tweaked to be stable. I have used the same RAM in my old DFI set-up and they performed better than the OCZ and G.SKILL 2 GB kits I had tried. If your RAM was defective you more than likely would not be able to even post/boot. Are your Genie BIOS settings still set at what you had listed in your previous thread? I had great results with these settings, stable up to 285mhz: DRAM Voltage Control.......................... - 2.60v DRAM Configuration Settings: DRAM Frequency Set............................ - 200=RAM/FSB:01/01 Command Per Clock (CPC)....................... - Enable CAS Latency Control (Tcl)..................... - 3 RAS# to CAS# delay (Trcd)..................... - 3 Min RAS# active time (Tras)................... - 8 Row precharge time (Trp)...................... - 3 Row Cycle time (Trc).......................... - 7 Bus Clocks Row refresh cyc time (Trfc)................... - 13 Bus Clocks Row to Row delay (Trrd)....................... - 02 Bus Clocks Write recovery time (Twr)..................... - 02 Bus Clocks Write to Read delay (Twtr).................... - 02 Bus Clocks Read to Write delay (Trwt).................... - 03 Bus Clocks Refresh Period (Tref)......................... - 3072 DRAM Bank Interleave.......................... - Enabled DQS Skew Control.............................. - Auto DQS Skew Value................................ - 0 DRAM Drive Strength........................... - Auto DRAM Data Drive Strength...................... - Auto Max Async Latency............................. - 8ns DRAM Response Time............................ - Fast Read Preamble Time............................ - 6.0ns IdleCycle Limit............................... - 256 Cycles Dynamic Counter............................... - disable R/W Queue Bypass.............................. - 16 x Bypass Max.................................... - 07 x 32 Byte Granularity........................... - Disable(4 Bursts)

However, to answer your question: If you can determine that they are definitely dying, RMA them. You have the older 16TD sticks, which utilize Micron 5B-D chips. Micron (after getting probably thousands of sticks back by RMA) made a new revision of the chips, called 5B-F, which no longer fail as much. Plus, their RMA service is excellent. Just talk to them online to obtain an RMA number.
