  1. I folks. I did a search but didn't find anything that actually made clear what I should do here. I built my system quite a few years ago. Wanted an ssd for the operating system, but ssd's were rather expensive then. ($200 US for a 120gb) So I put Win7 on the 120gb ssd, and raid 0'd three 1tb hard drives. Works well, but as the years have gone by the ssd has gotten rather full, and I realize now that a 3tb raid array is WAY more storage than an average user like me needs. (wry grin) It's a software raid using Win7. So what would be the best way to consolidate both drives onto a single ssd, one large enough to have plenty of headroom? It's fine if my current c:drive and the e:drive (raid set) have their own partitions, I'm used to that anyways. Can I just back them up seperately using Acronis, and then restore them each to the new drive? Thanks for listening.
  2. I have an Asus P8Z68-V Pro motherboard. New. Got the system up and running, was testing various hard drive configs, and now the post is hanging up with the vga lights shining. Won't finish post, just dead in the water...I'm new to this --- just looking for avenues to fix the problem.
  3. Alright then. I'm good. Research appears to be a priority. What I want vs what I need. Thanks for the advice.
  4. Well then...*wry grin* I actually have been basing my component choices on gaming equipment. Being a rookie builder, I thought that gamers would have the edge in "state of the art" components. But what hornybluecow said makes sense. I guess I need to do a little more research. I want to build a (as much as possible) future ready multimedia work station, for cad, home audio recording and home video production. Damn! I hate being at the bottom end of a learning curve....Ram might not be what makes my system what I need...As far as my budget....I have about $300 a week as a free spending account.
  5. That's what I was planning. Just hoped that there were some decent 8gb modules out there somewhere...
  6. So I'm building a dream computer. Just have received a new Asus P8Z68-V Pro motherboard. Would like to Go right out of the gate with 32gb ddr3 2200 ram (8gb x 4). I know that seems like overboard/crazy/way too much $$$, but what I am hoping for is a build that can be used for serious CAD work as well as home audio studio and graphics design. Looking to build a semi-future enabled system. Having a hard time finding 8gb memory modules. Help me help myself, please? *wry grin* Proposed build: Operating System: Windows 7 Professional Case: Azza Hurrican 2000 Power Supply: Rosewill Lightning-1000 1000w, 80+gold, modular Mother Board: AsusP6Z68-V Pro Processor: Intel Core i7-2600k CPU Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H100 Memory: ??? Boot drive: Intel 510 Series 120GB SSD X2 in raid 1 Data Drive: Western Digital WD Caviar Black 1 TB SATA 6 GB/S 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache x4 in raid 0 Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 (possibly x2) Monitors: Samsung P2770FH 27-Inch Full HD LCD Monitor (X3)
  7. Hi. New to this. I'm a first time builder and am sorting through a lot of questions. Here's the one relating to this forum. I'm looking at trying different raid configurations ( raid 0, raid 1, raid 10 ) using different configurations of drives ( 4 hdds, 2ssd+2hdd, etc). Want to test different configurations. But I seems that I need to reformat the drives when I set up a new raid configuration. This not an issue, but the OS might be. If I have to install Win 7 pro each time I reconfigure, am I going to be able to do so without having to get a new license? Or do I have to call Bill each time and get a new activation key? I will not be changing the mother board or the CPU, just the hard drives.
