Thanks for the responses! I really do appreciate it. There is a new version of Malwarebytes(3.0) and they are claiming that you no longer need antivirus in addition to their product. That's why I was considering only Malwarebytes and a good firewall. I'm still skeptical though. I apologize for the late response. Thanks again!

I was wondering if anyone might be able to recommend a good Antivirus and Firewall software? I take care of a couple of family members PC's and am currently using Kaspersky Total Security for them and myself, but for myself it's really more than I need on my PC. My family members are not technical people so I think this is a good choice for them because they have a habit of installing unwanted software by clicking on those scan your PC and different spam ads on various websites. They're kind of elderly and apparently don't remember that I've told them to be careful about these kind of things because they've caused some issues that I had to sort out on several occasions. I'm not really wanting to change their AV, but will consider the different options if anyone has suggestions. I'm mainly asking for use on my PC because this version of Kaspersky is more than I need. I just want a simple antivirus and firewall to use in addition to Malwarebytes. After working in tech support for awhile, I really trust Malwarebytes and intend to keep using it. Actually, I'm considering only using Malwarebytes and a good firewall and was also wondering what you thought about that? Whether the AV and firewall is purchased or free doesn't really matter to me as long as it's not too expensive, but if there's a good free version that would be great. Also I was wanting to edit my profile here on the forums, but have been unable to find how to change anything other than my email and password. When I click on Edit Profile it brings me to the page to change email and password with several tabs on the left for Profile Feed, Likes, Topics, Friends, Posts, and gallery. I'm not sure if I'm just overlooking it, but I can't seem to find anything that lets me edit the details of my profile such as signature, details about myself, and such. Thanks to posts on here, a few other places, and some youtube videos I have my G3258 running stable at 4.6Ghz now and am still learning about overclocking. I'm wanting to get a better processor later on when my budget is better. Thanks!

I've been reading through the forums and articles here, tweaktown, and watching youtube videos for overclocking my motherboard and have learned a lot so far, but I have a couple of questions. I seem to have a stable overclock of 4.5Ghz going on G3258 in a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3 motherboard and I've noticed that when idle the core voltage and core ratio drop as I think I should expect them to with C states and EIST enabled. I've also noticed that when this happens the uncore ratio stays the same and does not drop. Is this normal behavior or should it be dropping like the core does? Also in the BIOS settings I've got the Ring voltage set normal with an offset of 0.150v. I used this offset setting based on the BIOS seemingly indicating that the Normal setting is 1.050v and with the offset would get 1.2v. Does anyone know if the 1.050 is the actual voltage that the BIOS sets for Normal setting on the ring voltage for this motherboard? Is there a way other than a voltmeter to monitor this voltage? My hardware and settings are as follows: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 Intel G3258 Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400 DDR3 Corsair 700 watt power supply (can't remember the exact model) An older Nvidia GTX560Ti Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro v2 (I wished that I had read through these forums before buying it, but it seems to keep my temp spikes at a maximum of 70, so it's okay for now) Uncore Ratio: 43 CPU Vcore: Normal CPU Vcore offset: +0.150 (this gives me a Vcore of 1.200 at load) CPU Ring voltage: Normal CPU Ring Voltage Offset: +0.150 XMP profile 1 which set DRAM volatge at 1.65 at 2400 So far I haven't had to adjust Agent, Digital, or Analog voltages so they are all set to Auto. Hello all, As the subject says, I'm new to overclocking and I have a few questions. I've just installed a G3258, Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3, and Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400. I've been following a post on here on how to overclock the G3258 and have got a overclock at 4.4 Ghz running Prime95 blend test right now. I'm using HWinfo to monitor voltages and temperatures and I've noticed that core #0 temp fluctuates anywhere from 3-6 degrees while running. Is that normal, or should I be concerned? Core #1 only fluctuates 1-2 degrees. I know the temp is going to fluctuate some, but don't know if that is excessive. I was also wondering if someone could recommend a thermal paste. It's been about 10 years since I built a PC, so I'm not sure which one to use. I've been reading through the forums and have already learned a lot. Thanks!

Total Nerd, My reasons for overclocking are many of what you mentioned. I plan on buying a better CPU later on and would possibly like to overclock it as well and thought that I would start with this budget priced CPU so that I don't lose an expensive one if I make some mistakes. I would like to be able to play some games if I decide to at a later time. I also like the challenge of learning something new that's out of bounds for the general population and need something to keep me busy right now. You're right, there are probably some things that my old quad core would have been better at, but that system was getting to be too unstable for me and I didn't want to invest much money in getting these old components to keep working as I needed them to. Plus I wouldn't be able to upgrade it much either with those older components and I wanted to get USB 3 support. Right away I started noticing some slowness in web browsing and some other things at the stock speed of the G3258. I've now added an aftermarket cooler and have it running at 4.5Ghz and I'm quite happy with the performance now. I haven't got it completely stable yet, but I think that I'm pretty close. Hello again, thanks for all of the replies. I've been helping a family member through some surgery for the last few days so I haven't had time to check back here until now. Strangely, I set my account to receive emails if anyone replied, but I never got any so I didn't know that anyone had replied until I looked just now. When I made that first post, this new new setup would not run Prime95 blend and stay stable. I had ram Memtest86 overnight with no problems, and had ran Prime95 small fft's for four hours with no issues, but ran into problems trying to run Prime95 blend. I tried running that blend test four of five times, but it would always crash no matter what I tried. I was beginning to think that maybe the memory controller was bad, but after searching through the forums and looking at the bios settings I found that the bios was not setting the DRAM voltage high enough even with the XMP profile. The voltage was set at 1.5v and I saw that the memory was rated at 1.65v, so I played around with the voltage settings and was able to run Prime95 blend for over six hours with a setting of 1.64v on the DRAM. That's pretty good isn't it? So now I think I'm ready to move onto overclocking the CPU and I'm using the guide mentioned to start off with. I Am A Cow: I already had your guide bookmarked and had made some notes to follow based on that guide. I then looked through the bios to find all of the different settings mentioned in that guide. Thank you for all of the explanations, they really helped! New Member: My old processor was an Intel Core 2 Q6600. I had probably been using it for around nine or ten years, but something was starting get flaky with that build. I finally got tired of trying to keep the old build going and the seemingly never ending issues, so I decided to build a new system. Because of it being back to school time for my kiddo's my budget was limited, so I looked around on some different forums and saw that a lot of people were having great results with the G3258. Because I could get it at good price and didn't have to worry possibly damaging an expensive CPU if I made any mistakes(I seem to make a lot), I decided to go that route. So I did some searching and found a motherboard and memory to go along with the CPU and that's how I ended up with these components. I also thought that if I wanted to upgrade to a better processor later on that this motherboard would allow me to do that. I don't really need the fastest system because I don't game much if at all anymore and just wanted something that would be more stable for daily use. I haven't got an aftermarket CPU cooler yet and would like to get a modular power supply and a new case with USB 3 later on so that I can get to where I can do some games if I want. It might take me a little while to get everything that I would really like have because of budget constraints, but I'll get there eventually. I hope that everyone is doing well this evening. I've put together 3 or 4 computers, but have never overclocked any of them. I've just built a semi new budget system and am interested in overclocking it. I say semi new because it's a new motherboard, processor, and memory, but the rest of the components are from a previous build. I got the Intel G3258 because it fit my budget at the moment and because I've read that it has great overclocking potential. I paired that with a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 and 8 Gig of Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400Mhz memory. I'm using a Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti video card and a Corsair GS700 power supply in an older but nicely ventilated NZXT case with some Cougar 120mm fans. So far I've found some great information from this site, but I already have some questions from running stability tests and I look forward to learning more. I will post my questions about stability test results in what I think is the appropriate forum when I can. Currently, it won't let me post again until tomorrow so hopefully I'll run into you later.
