In Topic: SI 290X Lightning for 330€ , should i go for it?

He's in Greece, though. I like the 290X (at least watercooled), can't wait to see what AMD brings with the next card.

Heck our Minister of Economy is an ex Valve economist , i'm waiting for free hardware upgrades and steam sale coupons :P

On topic now  , i'm thinking of grabbing that Lightning for 330€ , selling my 670 and see what the 3XX has to offer when the time comes , who knows maybe i'll just sell the Lightning for 200 and grab one of those then. I just can't stand gaming at 1440p on my 670 :P

What's wrong with the Palit 970? Honestly the 970 and 290X offer almost the same performance with it coming down to game per game wins for one or the other BUT the 970 is just more refined with better temperatures and lower power consumption (and PhysX if you care). Believe me I love AMD cards and if the savings were greater I'd recommend the 290 but since they're so close (with getting the Palit) that the 290X is hard to justify.

Is your 670 overclocked out all the way? My 7970 has been running my 2560x1600 monitor quite well at near max settings in most games and I haven't even overclocked it yet. It might be best to wait to see what 300 does to help out pricing or competition IMHO

My 670 is running at stock clocks , autoboost to 1070 . The 7970 is a 680 with 3GB of VRAM so it should perform admirably better than my 2Gig 670 :P

I would spend a few extra and go 970, or wait for the newer amd, but don't put your money on how good the rumors are about how fast it will be.

To be honest the 970 won't perform as good at 1440p . Plus after the 3.5GB VRAM scandal exploded i'm really sceptical about getting one. Heck , Shadow of mordor eats up 4gigs of VRAM at 1080p.

Yeah if you're going to spend 330 euros for a used 290X then I'd say spend the extra for the GTX970....I feel bad for you guys over there :(

The G1 970 goes for 400€ T_T. I think i'm better off waiting for the 3xx...maybe pick up a used 290 for now and then get a 3xx...

I thought you said the 970s were just over 350€? I wouldn't pick up the 290X if you're planning to wait for the 300s to drop...because even if you still decide to go for one, the 300s will drop the 290X prices...or just go for the 970 but not when the 290X is so close to it in pricing. If I was coming to Greece I'd buy one for you from the states, those prices are terrible. I've seen some 290Xs go for like 204€ here used

+1

Well the cheaper ones go for 350€+ , meaning palit , if i were to get a 970 i'd get a G1 Gaming , which usually retails for 390€+. I know the retailers here are literally ripping us off that's why i thought a used 290x LIghtning is such a good deal at 330€( brand new Lightning retails for 440+). Better performance than the 970 for 2\3 of the cost. The only reason i want to upgrade now is that i just got an 1440p monitor and my 670 is struggling to keep up in most games. So you could say i'm in a pickle here. 290x Or wait for 3xx. A long and painful wait full of frame drops :P

Your powersupply'll handle it just fine as long as it's a good one.

That seems grossly overpriced though, at least for 'Murrrrica, Idk what new prices are for a 290X...here you could get a new GTX970 for that and still have money left over.

Well , a brand new 290X Lightning goes for 400+ euros , a brand new 970 goes for 350+ euros .  My PSU was recommended from two cables of overclock.net.

This seems overpriced and I would just wait for the 3xx anyway.

Well it's like getting an 290x Lightning for 250$. Still overpriced?
