#2155861 Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 4GB Reviewed

Posted by VaporX on 12 August 2016 - 07:59 AM

When I am pushing hard with the 8 gig model I see power draw from the wall for the entire system of around 320 so I would say he listed total system draw.

As for 8GB vs 4GB, for 1080P 4GB is enough and a 470 or 480 put together with a good Freesync monitor like from Nixeus, AOC or Viewsonic that is 24", 1080P at 144Hz and you have a reasonable price build that is gaming nirvana.

#2142851 HDMI 2.0 Support Missing on AMD Fiji Silicon

jdm_freek your points are correct, the Fury cards are designed, from ground zero for use in a gaming environment. As such the minute you throw gaming out the door the lack of this feature on the Fury is a none issue since your not gaming there is no real reason to push into a gaming enthusiast card. As for this feature not being impliented, I have no idea why it was not but for the majority of enthusiast gamers this is not really an issue since they will be using 4K monitors which is all DP for 60 Hz.

#2139549 psu needed for 290 cf

Posted by VaporX on 13 April 2015 - 05:32 AM

There are a few PSU calculators out there to figure this and they give some fairly accurate reads.

Using your sig info a bit of guess work for dual 290 an 850 should handle the load well. If you plan to go to three then I would get a 1K PSU.

Now in fairness these numbers are a bit of overkill and can be backed down and still be viable, but these are good, safe suggestions.

As for brand I personally like Seasonic as you get what you think your getting. Most brands just rebrand, if I have a choice I stay for a direct manufacturer that I know. Rebranding is okay if the company uses a set provider but most PSU resellers switch the OEM regularly even within the same product sku.

I'd never consider a PSU without one strong single 12V rail, usually having one is the first indicator of quality.

This is wrong, quality is not shown by a single rail, especially since many so called multi-rail are single rail. There are reasons for multi-rail but in truth for computer use a single rail is a better choice. However it does no represent better quality.

#2115385 Miners...I don't like you

Posted by VaporX on 27 February 2014 - 06:21 AM

At the LAN events I have attended the conversation always turn to this and gamers everywhere I have spoken to agree, mining has made a mess for gamers. As for used cards, no matter the pricing I WOULD NOT buy a used card right now. The miners have beat the crap out of them and will dump them on ebay cheap. Your card might work a few weeks and then suddenly die and this is the likely outcome. Be very careful buying used.

#2090306 Intel Core i7 4770K Reviewed

Reading around the various reviews I have to say this chip is disappointing. The IGP in a chip at this price point makes little sense because people using it will put in discrete. Once you remove the IGP increase from the equation the performance boost is lack luster at best. I see little here to compel and Ivybridge or even a Sandybridge owner to jump into the new platform.

#2084749 What is the benefit of playing game at 1920X1080?

Posted by VaporX on 14 April 2013 - 11:55 AM

Okay lets clear some stuff up, higher resolutions does NOT mean better image quality in all cases. Higher resolution means, if the game supports it, more information on the screen. By having a larger resolution you can see more of the game world at once. As for image quality, depending on the video card it can be a wash. A game at high detail and your 768 resolution will look a lot better than a game at low detail and 1080. So depending on the hardware lower resolution can be a benefit as it means the game can look better. I can tell you my move from 1080 to 1440 did little to really change the way the games look dispite people telling me it would make a huge difference.

if you are happy with the way your games look then do not sweat it and tell your friend to kiss off. The BEST resolution to game it is the one YOU enjoy.

#2084320 Bad day thread

Posted by VaporX on 11 April 2013 - 06:14 AM

While some might find it a good day, for me yesterday was a bad day...

  • Dental appointment revealed I need over $4000 worth of work done...
  • Thermast in our bedroom caught fire and wife put it out before it took off.
  • Truck brakes are in need to repair, started squealing yesterday
  • My daughter got an eviction notice from her apartment
  • Some software I was testing trashed my main gaming system....

I know it could be worse but seriously..... Feel like I lived through a country music song.

you mean people actually used hotmail? lol

I actually tell my listeners that for a home user there is zero reason to use anything but a free web based mail like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail/Live/Outlook, Mail.com and a few others.

Do you know what NDA is? NDA means NO DISCUSSION AGGREEMENT. Until the NDA is lifted all the benchmarks are BS. I am not saying any results on the net are accurate or unaccurate but Intel does not give discriminatory rights to TOM'S QUEER.

I met Anand from Anandtech and he has more clout than anybody period. If Intel does not give Anand any permission, TOM"S QUEER wont either.

First, you're wrong, it's non-disclosure agreement.

Second, do you really think any of us don't know what an NDA is?

ROFL, I have so many NDA's signed that I have lost count and just keep pretty much everything secret :wallbash:

Second just because Anand did not get to go first does not mean Tom's would not get the chance. Tom's as a site carries a LOT of weight with the tech industry and the fact they published this shows that Intel did give them the go ahead. No one risks losing Intel as a source.

At any rate, one of my beef's with Intel is their iGPU with mid-to-low level CPU's. Ivy Bridge, for instance, I would think it would be more beneficial to have an HD 4000 in all of the CPU's, rather than dumb it down on the mid-to-low level ones with HD 2500's and just have the top-end ones with the HD 4000. Anyone spending $200 - $300 on a CPU is most likely going to get a discrete graphics card to use. Anyone spending less and utilizing the iGPU instead for gaming would be far better off using AMD's APU's, which leaves Intel's mid-to-lower end CPU's in kind of a rut.

This is something that has never made any sense to me. How often is someone going to buy a top of the line processor and NOT put in a discrete video card? I mean I understand some people do but that cannot be the norm. Now drop down to the lower tier and it is very much the norm. Would make a lot more sense to put the best iGPU in the lower end chips.

#2080537 Okay all you left wingers, explain this.

Posted by VaporX on 16 March 2013 - 01:50 PM

This statement stood out to me as much as the cost...

"Evidence shows that the death penalty is not a deterrent, it cannot be administered without racial bias.."

I am so sick of hearing this horse shit shoveled. I heard the other day of a school that has the federal government investigating if they give detention to more black kids. Now I understand that if the same number of kids of all races are getting into as much trouble and the one race is the only one getting detention but the issue seems that more of one race was actually getting into trouble.

Look I understand that at times we see statistics that seem disproportionate to the cultural makeup that that often is just the way things fall. I mean should we say Basketball need s a federal investigation because there are more blacks in it? Should we say that schools teaching physics should be examined because so few blacks take the courses?

Most so called racial bias is not a bias but the people but a cultural choice. You cannot legislate that away if you want true equality. People should be equally allowed to do stupid things and pay the price for them. Not make the price less for one side because they do the stupid thing more often in one region.
