  1. I had the same problem. There s no need to change firmware on your Maxtor...there s no need to become a harware engineer just to get to have your pc booting normal. If you read the following answer I got from Maxtor you ll see that things are very simple. You will only need to BUY another brand of a SATAII drive in order to boot on NF4 sata controller. I had 3 brand new MAXTOR of 300GB.I was dreaming to set a RAID on NF4 SATAII chipset... and I still dream of it. Not Maxtor ,neither NVIDIA are going to do something about that. They both suggested to inform DFI in case THEY fix the problem with a new BIOS!!! Go figure now... Let me know if you have any further problem. Best regards, Meiling Maxtor Technical Support
  2. Read the following answers from MAXTOR and NVIDIA and you ll understand that in the EXPENSIVE world of incompatibility we are all alone . Just us and our $$$ bucks. The less they check their products the more we pay to have a pc working normal. So there's no need to upgrade Maxtor's firmware and become a hardware engineer before you can play tetris on your machine... cause simply NF4 DOES NOT SUPPORT MAXTOR DRIVES...It just cant be any better!!! MAXTOR REPLIED TO ME AS FOLLOWS... Discussion Thread Response (MG) 01/05/2006 01:14 PM Thank you for replying. We will investigate this issue however a fix most likely would come through an SBIO update, not a chipset driver update. You may want to report this to your motherboard manufacturer as well so that they may have a report on this and hopefully release a BIOS update for your motherboard once a fix is made available. Customer (Spyros Spyratos) 01/05/2006 11:44 AM The model of my Hard Disk is MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX 10 6V300F0 300GB SATA 3Gb. Unfortunately there was no way to boot this disc from NF4 and there was no way to set a RAID on NF4 with those discs. I bought 3 of them and I use them on the other controller of SiliconImage which is SATA I. I hope this problem can be resolved with a new chipset driver. Thank you for answering to my email.
  3. MAXTOR REPLIED TO ME.... NOTHING TO DO... NOTHING TO WAIT FROM MAXTOR..NOTHING TO WAIT FROM NVIDIA... read the answer and youu ll understand that or you buy a different brand of a SATA II disc to work on SATAII controller or you decide to work Silicon Image controller which is SATAI only. It was impossible to use one of them for system... they never boot correctly and recently I found out that they can be set on RAID 0 (stripe) only on a SiliconImage Sata controller and there is no way to do the same on an NF4 Nvidia sata controller. Both controllers are available on my DFI LANPARTY NF4-DR motherboard... and it's sad to pay for sata II disks and be forced to use them as sata I. I would appreciate if you possibly help me to get the most of my Maxtor disks. Thank you Spyros Spyratos AND NVIDIA REPLIED ALSO... 4. Try install your hard drive on Silicon Image Controller (enable it in BIOS) and be sure to have jumpered correctly. Check also sata and power cables to your hard drive cause they are too easy to be unplugged without noticing it. Simos
  5. well try to jumper your raptor to SATAI if possible. We may discover another incompatibility. And also try to boot with your raptor connected to SiliconImage controller. I have two maxtors on RAID 0 on sil.Image they work fine. The NF4 chipset is the troublemaker...

  7. Yes Sir, as soon I ve changed the booting drive its all gone perfect. With a maxtor to boot my pc kept freezing in random points and made me crazy.I had to restart it more than 200 times and each time freezed on a different point. From the first LANPARTY logo to the point that windows ask to create a partition... Nothing to make you think that is a hard drive problem... I changed all parts ,even the PSU when Maxtor informed me that there s incompatibility between MAXTOR and NF4 sata controller. You cant even set a RAID with Maxtors on NF4 chipset. So I moved it to Silicon Image Controller and put a Western Digital 120GB SATAII on NF4 and works just fine. I sent an email to NVIDIA about this incompatibility and they answered me telling that its not their fault it may be resolved with a new SBIO (which I dont know what it is) by DFI company. Go figure now... Maxtor says that NF4 does not support Maxtor drives NVIDIA says that there's nothing to do about not even a driver update can fix that... I sent an email to ANGRY_GAMES admin of this Forum who works for DFI company but I got no reply... So it seems that nobody wants to trouble with this issue and the solution is uppon our hands...I mean in our pockets by buying a new drive. I had problems with setting a network too but I m not sure thats a motherboard's problem too. I cant stand that after I spent 3000$ i only have 3000 problems and need more money to spend to get them fixed. I found out that with 2 X 7800GTX on SLI my PSU of 550 Watts is not enough and makes my PC shut down... So there s more money to spend and another week to loose... Just try to boot with a another drive and put windows on it if you want to use SATAII feature anyway or you can put your MAXTOR on Silicon Image Controller changing the jumper to SATAI on your hard drive.Be sure to enable SATA sockets in BIOS. I wish you Good Luck and in case it works as I told you let me know by email Simos Greece
  8. I hope you dont use any MAXTOR DRIVES. I just got an email from MAXTOR that NF4 chipset DOES NOT SUPPORT Maxtor drives. I have three 300GB SATAII 16MB Buffer and I am forced to put them on SilImage controller.I bought a WD 120GBSATAII to put on NVIDIA Controller and works fine. I ve lost 2 weeks changing and testinh any removable part of my PC cause it kept freezing in random moments during reboot or later and it was all because of Maxtor that I wanted to use for system. Greetings from Greece Simos Email from MAXTOR Follows: Dear Simos, Nforce 4 chip set does not support SATA II 300 drive, set SATA 150 jumper may work around this issue. Let me know if you have any further problem. Best regards, Meiling Maxtor Technical Support
  9. When I play Need For Speed Underground 2 in 1280x960 resolution and put High level of detail (but no AA )my PC shuts down in less than a millisec. Is that what we call great timings? I paid almost 3000$ to build a powerful PC and a 2 two years old game shuts it down. I left all drivers and BIOS as they were shipped with my hardware. I am not interested in OC my PC. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Simos The Greek
  10. Hello from Greece. I had similar problems.I had to change every single part of my pc when finally an email came from MAXTOR to tell me that NF4 DOES NOT SUPPORT MAXTOR DRIVES. So I had to buy a western digital 120 GB SATAII to put WINDOWS on it and connect Maxtor 300GB SATAII at silicon Image Sata Controller in my LANPARTY NF4 SLI-DR. Now I discovered a brand new problem! I use 2 x MSI NX7800GTX and if I try to put a high resolution to an old game I get a nice and really fast SHUT DOWN of my PC. I dont knowwhat to do right know.
