  1. Thanks RGone. NOT what I wanted to hear though (but hey, that's life, eh?). There is just no room under the Zalman to fit a ram stick. And since the chipset fan (NOT the CPU fan) is failing for the SECOND time, if I have to pull the mobo out to fix all this stuff, I'm just replacing it. It'll mean a system rebuild, but I'm just not getting the quality out of this board that I though I would. While I'm certainly not enough of a chip head to understand how these things are designed, I have to say that I'm very dissapointed with this board. I might be able to mod the fan to slide a ram stick in that slot, but I don't know. At present, with things set the way they are, I ran Mem86 + overnight and had no errors. Perhaps I'll get lucky, but you're experience doesn't seem to indicate that so I might very well be SOL.
  2. Nope. Unfortunately, there is no way that the ram will fit, since I'm using a very large Zalman fan on my CPU. The CPU is an Athlon 3800+
  3. Thanks. I'm not sure exactly what you meant by all that, but it's enough to get me started. However, when you say the 'further orange slot' I have to assume that you mean the only one I can get to. Thanks, and any more advise that folks think of would be great.
  4. I know that there are threads about the Ballistix ram, and they are pretty comprehensive. Unfortunately, I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to setting up ram. I was hoping someone could help clear this up. The pertainant machine specs are in my sig, but here is more info on the ram: Capacity 512MB Speed DDR 500 (PC 4000) Cas Latency 2.5 Timing 2.5-4-4-8 Voltage 2.8V ECC No Registered/Unbuffered Unbuffered Heat Spreader Yes I originally bought 2 sticks. One went bad and I sent it back. Got the new one, and it went bad. I'd switched around the slots, to make sure it wasn't a slot issue, and I don't think it is. When I say it went bad, what I mean is, with Mem86+, both sticks had solid errors, the machine was completely unstable and wouldn't boot. I am running the sticks in the Yellow slots, because I can't use the orange slots due to the CPU fan size. The original install I used all the auto settings. since then, I've manually set the voltage to 2.8v Is this board just eating memory or am I just very unlucky? To recap: of the two original sticks I bought, only one went bad. And the one that didn't is STILL working just fine. But the stick that just arrived today, had an error after just 2 hours of testing. Any ideas? THanks a ton!
  5. Thanks for the information folks. I should add, that I contacted the DFI tech support about this, and one engineer gave me the link to the evercool fan. Angy (the guy on this board, not me) also sent me a link to an excellent step by step set of instructions to replace the fan. I appreciate the help, but I gotta say, I'm way, way pissed off by the shoddy workmanship. I mean, they might RMA the thing, but then what happens to me in the mean time? Not to mention the fact that if I damage the MB while replacing their broken fan, then my warenty is voided. That's total crap, for sure. So, if I was supposed to send back the entire MB (and wait weeks, no doubt for a replacement), then what? I've got to risk damaging my processor by removing it, and the fan, from the MB before shipment? And then they'd no doubt give me another MB with the same crappy fan on it. Can't say as I'd recomend this MB to anyone, especialy since there are LOTS of fan complaints and DFI has not addressed this very simple issue.
  6. Yesterday, I noticed that the very small (and very loud) chipset fan started to make even louder noises, then stopped. I assumed, that since the CPU fan only turns on when needed, it was the same with this fan. After I stopped playing FEAR and noticed that the fan was still not working, I began to get worried. After more trouble shooting, and some reading of forums, it became apparent that the fan on my 3 week old (ordered on Nov 30), expensive, motherboard was not working. I installed the Smartguardian util, and saw that the chipset temp was up to 60c. Not good. More time poking around on the net, and I discovered that this is a common problem with these MBs -- hence this post. When I manually spun the fan this morning, it spun just fine. When I turned on the computer, it spun up for a second, then shut down. I went into Smartguardian and greatly lowered the temperature for the chipset fan to turn on, and it started running just fine. Last night, despite changing the settings (although I didn't lower the fan startup temp because the chipset temp was between 57-60, and according to the program the fan should have already been on), I could not get the fan to spin up. So, I'm thinking of replacing the thing. Some folks talked about the Evercool vc-re, but I have been completely unable to locate that. I need a very low profile fan because my graphics card extends over it. Due to the limitations of the MB, I can't use the other PIC slot, which is sort of annoying, but might not help anyway, since it looks like the card would still extend over the area. So, here are the two fans I'm considering buying: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835110103 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835110102 (sorry for the newegg links, but they have the best info) I don't really want to go moding things. I'm not that much of a power user, but now that the fan is running, I'm a little afraid to turn it off, and I need to order these things today so I can have them by Friday in case the fan craps out. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks!
