    Ram

Links is the problem. No one really sells PC4000 ram. Here is a link to newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820231021 Still I think that's pretty expensive. I mean they have DDR2 ram 800 Mhz out now...shouldn't this stuff be cheaper?

    Ram

seriously what is a nice pair ? I found PC 4000 ram on newegg and the cheapest for 2gb is $209...that's a little too much I think no? If I get an Opteron 170 rather then 165 which has a multiplier of 10, could pc3200 ram work? Cuz new egg is no longer selling the opty 165 for $150.

    Ram

Ok fine. I agree. For my setup with an opty 165 what kind of ram do I need to get( 2 sticks of 1gb).? Thanks

    Ram

Hi, I want to bring my PC up to 2gb of ram. I also plan on getting an Opteron 165...at the same time. Kinda of a refresh if you will. I'm not sure how to upgrade the ram. Should I get 2 more 512's? That way I will have 4 dimms of 512 totaling 2gb, but which ones? Can I have 2 512s of what I have now and 2 more from another brand of ram? How will those overclock? If one set is faster will that hold the other one back. On the other hand should I dump my 512's and get 1 sticks of 1gb? How would you guys do it. I'd rather not spend $200 on this upgrade...I'd like to go under $100...if possible. Thanks for your advice.

    New CPU

Hi, Thanks for the replies. I know there are few apps/games with dual core support, but if you are running multiple things at once wouldn't you have both cores working together...and in the end its faster then having just one core? I think so.

    New CPU

Ok...you sold me. I think what you guys are saying is that its the Ghz that counts right? So if I could get a 2.6-2.8 out of an opteron that costs $153 newegg, why bother getting an Althon 64 x2 4400 for $180 which can overclock to the same freq. And they are both dual core so... One last thing I went to newegg and a guy posted this comment for this CPU: "You might get this insteadL"CB9E 0646RPMW" It says opteron 165 on the box but it is in fact not. It is actually an old AMD X2 chip with some extra cache to match the opty's cache." What are the chances that I will not get an opteron on newegg?

    New CPU

What does that mean? After an average overclock what can I expect it to be as fast as? 4400 x2? 4600 x2?

    New CPU

u know, I never thought about opterons...didn't think my board worked with them...but looks like it may. Is opteron better then Althon 64 x2? The Opteron 165 is only 1.8Ghz too...so that's a bit slow right? I looked at some benchmarks and the opty 165 is comparable to the 3800 x2...

    New CPU

Hi, I have a (well just look at my signature). Anyhow I would like to buy a new CPU, dual core of course. What would you suggest. I looked at the prices and it seems I have to spend about $180 for a X2 4400. But should I get the 4400 or the 4200 and overclock it? According to anandtech tests there is not that much difference between a 4200 and a 4600? What do you guys think? Thanks, gvayl
  10. seriously though if I notice that for some config I can get memtest to run faster, but have a lower ram freq...should I go with that or higher mem freq?
  11. I was trying to overclock my ram. I ran at 2 3 3 6 and 2.9 volts, hht @ 225Mhz. I ran memtest #5 for 25 iterations. The Overclock guide in the forum said that if I raised the first value 2 to 3 I might get a higher hht. I tried that and raised the hht to 230...but I got memtest errors. So I rebooted and changed back to 2-3-3-6 and 225hht, but now the computer won't post. I get 3 red lights which on my board means ram not recognised. I tried using only 1 chip in channel a(either orange or yellow slots), but no luck. Did my ram fry? Would reseting CMOS help? What can I do? Thanks
  12. is the speed at which memtest86 complets say tst #5 a goog indication of how fast your ram works. I mean i bumped the voltage during one of me tests to 2.8v and went from 210htt to 220 and test #5 took longer to complete. Thats why i'm asking.
  13. i'm using smart guardian/smart-speed for volts. Are you telling me they are not acurate? Also the overclocking guide says:CPU VID (Voltage Identification) Control (CPU Vcore) This is a tricky one.. Its gonna depend on how good your temps are and how far your willing to take it. For 90nm cores (i.e. Sandiego, Venice, x2, Winnies) its best to stick around 1.6v-1.65v MAX I have also seen other people use 1.6-1.65v on theirs? I've been running prime for 9 hrs [email protected] 1.62V Vcore. And don't get me started on the english internationals....;-)
  14. the voltage is 1.616V.... I set the VID to 1.475 and the special is at 110% so that yields about 1.62V... the temp was below 40 while running super pi
