I don't blame you for not wanting to tempt the fates .. Myself, I'm a crazy bastard and can go through a dozen os installs in a week on my machines at times .. In regards to beta software overall, you are always on your own. You post issues as you see them in the event someone else has an answer and keep on going if they don't. nforce drivers are on here

The config I run works with everything except vista .. worst I've run into was a dmraid issue in linux that wasn't allowing me to see my nvraid set, but that was a specific software issue. This is really similiar to what I saw with dmraid. Once I have vista loaded, I can add the nv controller + drives (re-enable in bios), but even then, it isn't right .. with the nvraid driver loaded, I see my drives as 2 seperate drives, not a single 306GB that normally shows everywhere else (xp and linux). It's very specific to vista, so that says it is a software issue, not hardware, but the combination of hardware may be what is making the software issue come to light. besides, now I'm :mad: as I reinstall :eek2: after making myself :confused: about how I managed to kill the nvatabus so badly that vista stopped booting .. at which point, when I ran the last known good config option, all of my passwords into the system disappeared :nod: I'm really taking all of this with a grain of salt .. My specific needs for vista revolve around the actual configs in the os, not the install. As long as I can get it installed, I'm fine .. the drive issue was more of a slowdown, but since I know how to get past that for now, it doesn't matter greatly. It will matter more in half a year if / when I decide to make the switch to vista as my windows OS.

You're also not using hitachi drives ... there aren't very many people having this problem, so I'm really just trying to find the common denominator, which may be the hitachis. I can't see where the nv sata / nvraid is the issue, this isn't raid specific, this is with the hitachi drives set in a standalone config too. Once they are disconnected, the system boots fine and sees all of the ide drives that I connect. Likewise, when I'm booting with just the ide drives (even though they aren't in raid), I still have the raid controller enabled, just nothing attached that's sata. It isn't a drive conflict that I can see, even with all disconnected except for a single sata drive and the dvdrw, nothing is seen. The above is all with the nvidia controller .. When I connect the hitachi's to the sil controller, system boots and sees all the drives (except the sata drives) and progresses to the upgrade / custom install screen, at which point, you can load drivers for the sil. This is why I am thinking it's an issue that revolves around 3 requirements .. nv sata, hitachi drives, and vista. Like I said at the beginning of this though, not enough people are running into this to be able to find the common factors or see if nyone has found an alternate solution to get around the undetected drives issue. If it is a drive issue, I can easily resolve this by simpy getting some new (different brand) sata drives, but I don't want to start blindly buying other hardware if there is another resolution to the whole problem.

Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 SATA-II (80GB) I have 2x hitachis also .. when they are removed from the nvraid controller, I can see the other disks fine, when they are connected, no disks show. Dropped the speeds to sata 1.5gb and same thing on the nvraid .. moved drives to sil controller and all drives detected. I'm not sure if this is a controller issue or some weird incompatability between the controller + hitachi drives + vista. Since you have a different brand of sata available also, Raphie, can you see if you get past the drive detection with the other drives only connected?

I'm installing now, but still have to sort out why the drives aren't being detected. Right now, I have 2 drives connected .. one wd that I had reformatted (not sure if this made a difference) in xp and my dvdrw. I have all the other drives physically disconnected right now and once the install completes, I'm going to try different combos to see where I lose the drives again.

anyone running into "Setup could not get information about the disks on you computer" during the initial phase of setup? I've tried with both the 64 and 32 bit versions, same message. Nothing out of the ordinary with the drives I'm using, and even blowing out my raid and just running the hitachis as seperate independent sata drives, nothing is detected. Drives are working fine in xp and linux, so bad hardwae isn't a problem. I also have tried 2 different bios versions (the one with the 5.50 raid bios and the 704-2bt), but no difference in the error.

The couple of times I've used the plugin, it hasn't done jack for me .. usually I'm fighting new variants that the plugins don't handle yet

Findit, Hoster, Killbox, LSPfix, VX2Finder, CWShredder, HijackThis, and Kill2Me for those really stubborn infestations .. :nod: Generally, most spyware / adware that I have cleand from systems has been easily handled by adaware and MS anti-spyware. If you've done extensive amounts of cleaning, you've no doubt run into that extreme POS, VX2, which gets mutated often enough to become a real pain. The las vx2 I ran into was vx2 Aurora, which required several things to get it fixed up (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?s...ndpost&p=217660), one of which was ewida .. the scan took about 4 hours on the system that had been infested.

I use a combination generally. Adaware + MS antispyware catch most (I use these on my clients' systems). Add in peerguardian2 and use the lists from bluetack for the filter rules and you can block known trojans + known spyware ... http://info.bluefrogcs.com/images/pg2.jpg .. The exclusions list is also from bluetack, I just had to modify how the text was formatted so that peerguardian could use it as a filter. (this is pretty much all I uuse on my 2 xp systems .. my other machines are linux). And yes, it blocks idsoftware .. also nvidia, hp, compaq, apple, and assorted others (hence the exclusions list). Load it up with the bluetack lists and enable http blocking, you'll be amazed at all of the interesting things your suddenly blocking.
