  1. Yeah tried the other orange slot and the farthest yellow one also. Ryder from the OCZ forum suggested farthest orange so that's what I'm using. Vista is ok for installing it takes maybe an hour or so on my laptop (which is a single 1.6 w/ 2 GB RAM so this machine should be much faster)
  2. I'm setting up an nF590 right now and even though it seems to test ok (I've only run about 4 hours each of memtest86 and mprime right now) the windows install is incredibly slow. I've tried xp 32-bit and vista 64-bit and (for example) the vista "uncompressing files" step takes over an hour. I've done some searching and it seems like it's probably a RAM issue, I've RMAed the board once already so I'm hoping I can rule that out. If anyone has any ideas I'd definitely appreciate it. Right now I'm running it with 1 stick in slot 2 (farthest orange from CPU).
  3. ouch that's no fun. The BIOS chip needs to be flashed externally at this point, you basically have 2 options: 1. buy a new chip pre-flashed with what you want (try www.biosmedic.com) 2. hot-flash it (turn on a friend's PC, swap BIOS chips while it's running, flash, and swap the chip back out and into your PC. Hot-flashing is pretty dangerous because if you short out the wrong pins by accident you could end up frying your friend's mobo)
  4. Don't worry about it, based on what I've heard here I'll sitck to 7/28. Did you mean this? Untweaked 037 bios for the DFI CFX3200, be sure to set MAL and RP manually to at least 5.5 and 7 once its flashed and you must manually set TREF also, do NOT leave it at AUTO. I did that, I like to try to set as few options to "Auto" as possible because they usually just cause mayhem. Anyway right now I'm priming 301x9 1.3x101.4. I would go higher (board willing) but honestly I've never had a board overclock like this before so I'm a little scared and taking it slow.
  5. Wow interesting find, I'm glad to see somebody has the patience to sift through that huge thread. It probably depends a lot on how the rails are split as well, I'm guessing what they're trying to say is that the load isn't evenly distributed on the multi rail PSUs and one of them is getting overloaded. For what it's worth so far my OCZ GXS600 is working with my CFX3200, my sig isn't up to date currently I'm Priming 301x9 1.3Vx101.4% with the RAM on the 166 divider. Its rails are split as follows: 12V1 - misc loads (molex, sata hdds) and motherboard main power (24pin) 12V2 - PCI-E 6-pin #1 12V3 - 2 of the 4 power pins in the 8-pin 12V header 12V4 - 2 of the 4 power pins in the 8-pin 12V header, PCI-E 6-pin #2 Given the way they are split up I have my single X850 on 12V2 so each rail has something to play with, using all mobo power connectors (even the floppy one by the PCI-E slot), and I have 1 HDD and 5 fans (2x120, 1x80, 1x40, 1x70)
  6. That would be my guess, though I hardly know anything about intel CPUs. But even looking at overclocks between Athlons and Opterons you'll notice the Opterons usually either hit a better clock on average or hit the same clock with a lot lower Vcore. This next bit is a lot of hearsay and speculation but I've heard that AMD just cranks out 939 CPUs (for example, should apply to any one though) at their factory and tests them and puts them in different bins (called chip binning). Chips that run higher clocks or the same clocks at lower voltage are binned as mobile CPUs (although there is no mobile 939, bad example), FX series, or Opterons, and chips that do worse are binned as Athlons depending on their speed, and chips that do really poorly have part of their cache disabled, are retested for speed, and binned as Semprons.
  7. Don't know if I should have posted this in ATI Chipsets but here it is anyway. I have 2 problems with Tony's modded 7/28/06 BIOS (from TMod's very helpful CD) 1 - whenever I set DRAM Data Drive Strength it's always back at Auto when I get back into the BIOS 2 - it has an older version of the Silicon Image BIOS than the 7/28 BIOS (also on TMod's helpful CD), I can't remember the exact numbers but it's like 5.2.16 as opposed to 5.3.14. I normally wouldn't care but my system was setup with the 5.3.14 BIOS and with 5.2.16 it won't boot, it does 'verifying DMI pool data' and then just sits there, no "NO BOOT DEVICE" warnings (or whatever it is), and it doesn't freeze either because both numlock and ctrl+alt+del work. Anyway I just flashed back to 7/28 and everything is rolling smoothly I just was hoping like we all do that the new BIOS would magically make my overclock way better. Obviously to solve the #2 issue I would just have to install XP with the old SiI BIOS, but the first one was a little annoying as I've heard you have to set it back (towards -50%) as your RAM speed increases.

Well of course if you just look at the specs AMD puts out there's no difference between a dual 2.2GHz/1MB 939 opteron and a dual 2.2GHz 939 Athlon64, it's just well known by overclockers that the opteron, being a server chip, overclocks better. A chip's ability to overclock has little to do with its spec sheet from AMD. In fact overclocks can vary widely between different steppings for which AMD publishes identical specifications. The only exception I know of where the specs directly affect the overclock is if the chip is designed to operate at a lower voltage than normal (AthlonXP-M, Athlon64 X2 EE), or of course if it's a server chip.
  9. What mode do you have the controller set for in the BIOS? If it's one of the RAID modes all you need to do is attach a floppy drive to your PC, push F6 when prompted during windows setup (right at the start), and it will load the SiI 3114 RAID driver from the floppy (it doesn't load it until later on though F6 just gives it a heads up sort of). If you are using it in "SATA" mode like me the driver on the disk unfortunately does not support this mode so you need to make your own disk. Go find a working PC with a floppy drive, go here: http://www.siliconimage.com/support/suppor...&ctid=2&osid=4& and download the top zip file, "SiI3114 32-bit Windows BASE Driver". Unzip the contents onto a floppy and use it as I described above.
  10. Agreed, Happy_Games recommends that you never use the fan headers on the motherboard and always connect them directly to the power supply.
  11. Mine at stock voltage / clocks at full load and full RPM sits at around 55 C and it seems to be stable. I'm waiting on a Thermalright HR-05 SLI so I'm not going to do the AS5 just yet.
  12. deadeye, your system is trying to boot from the network. The short fix is to unplug your network cable while it is booting. For the long fix, in the BIOS under "Advanced BIOS Features" set "First Boot Device" to "Hard Disk", set "Second Boot Device", "Third Boot Device", and "Boot Other Device" to "Disabled". That should fix it. If you want you can set other things just make sure to disable "boot other device" and don't set any network devices as boot devices.

Hi ChriZ, actually if you check pages 26-28 of the manual here: http://us.dfi.com.tw/Upload/Manual/89900545.pdf they explain that with 2 sticks of RAM you have to put them both in the same colored slots (i.e. right beside each other) for dual channel operation. I agree that normally DFI motherboards require you to use slots 1+3 or 2+4 for dual channel but for this board you use 1+2 or 3+4. In either case on any DFI motherboard I have seen you put both sticks into the same colored slots for dual channel operation.

That's messed up, I mean the BIOS will only recognize around 3.5GB of RAM due to a limitation of the RS482's chipset or BIOS (I don't know which) but it should still operate in dual channel mode. I know on my board the black slots don't work period (not that I tried extremely hard but the blue ones work a heck of a lot better), but you should really have dual channel DDR333 as Comicdom1 said in this situation. Maybe make sure you have CPC turned off (i.e. use 2T) and check that you've set them to DDR333 (166MHz, or 5/6 divider). Also maybe try each stick on its own one at a time to make sure one isn't damaged (check for the full 1024MB on each one) Also regarding RAM slot color coding, if you put 2 sticks of RAM in the same colored slots (i.e. right beside each other) you get dual channel. If you check on page 26 of the motheboard manual it shows that from left to right (from CPU socket to IDE connectors) the RAM slots use channels A, B, A, B. For dual channel you obviously want the same amount of RAM in each channel. This is confirmed on page 27 where they tell you which slots to use for dual channel with 2 sticks of RAM.   15. Also try adjusting delay for hdd (secs), my RS482 has this same problem but there's no such setting in it so I just have to start it then reset it to get it to start. On my CFX3200 I just set the delay to 2s and I don't have this problem.
