  1. Thanks for that! Wow, is the delta really that high now? I'll have to take a look and see what I can find. I'm also a bit dated on the latest benchmarks - any suggestions for a solid gaming rig for 4k gaming? I usually buy in the "high mid-end" to "low high-end" range as that I do keep my machines for many years. I'd appreciate a good baseline of parts to compare to a premade, if possible. Thanks!
  2. Hi Gang, Long time member here who has always enjoyed building my own rigs. However, life is a lot busier these days so any free-time is more limited. That being said, what is the build vs buy analysis looking like in 2021? How much of a premium can you expect to pay buying a premade tower gaming rig vs just building one yourself? I'm tempted if that delta is somewhat reasonable, simply to save time. Lastly - who would you suggest for a good gaming rig? I would prefer someone who doesn't use junk components or puts you in a position where you can never upgrade RAM, HD, Video Card, etc.... as that I do tend to keep my machines for many years. Thanks for any help!

    Budget Build

Thanks! Any suggestions on a specific asrock mobo as well as RAM and a PSU?
  4. Hi All, I'm looking to put together a budget, low-end gaming machine for my kids. I already have a case, monitor, keyboard/mouse, hard drive, and a Nvidia 770GTX I can use (initially). What would you all suggest for the MOBO, CPU, RAM, and PSU? Target games would mostly be older games... WoW, some sim city type stuff, Minecraft, etc... Thanks!
  5. Hey All, Just curious if anyone has seen any good mid-line gaming laptop deals leading up and/or on Black Friday? Ideally, something in the sub 1k range if possible. Thanks for any suggestions!
  6. Wow, you're right. I had no idea prices were so inflated. Any idea if this is supposed to be a short term issue that is worth waiting out or is it expected to be the new "norm?"
  7. Hi All, I currently have a MSI 770 GTX that is starting to show it's age. The rest of my system includes a I5 4670k, 8 gigs of RAM, and a solid state drive. What would be a good affordable mid-line gaming card that would last me another few years? I've had my current system for a few years now and would like to extend its life by a few more years until I am ready to build a new rig from the ground up. P.S. - I game at 1920 x 1080 I appreciate your suggestions!
  8. And do you live near any Microcenters? No, I do not. I'm not aware of any decent hardware outlets in my area other than your typical Best Buy's and the like. I assume I'm likely stuck to online ordering unless a local retailer has a sale on a part or two.
  9. Thanks for the suggestion of parts! I believe I built my current system in 2007 or so. The only part that has been upgraded since then is the video card. I have: Q6600 MOBO = Nvidia 680i LT SLI 4 gigs of DDR2 RAM Geforce GTX 460 OS is on 2x 10k RPM raptor drives in RAID 0 Larger 7200 RPM storage drive Windows 7
  10. Thanks all for the reply. To answer your questions, I have a 27" inch monitor which supports 1920x1080. In the past, I have prefered Intel/Nvidia systems simply due to the maturity of their driversets but if that is no longer relevant, I am willing to look at AMD if there is a large savings to be had. The parts I'll be able to bring over are: - Monitor - Keyboard - Mouse - DVD drive - Speakers - Internal storage drive - Windows 7 The part's I'll be looking to buy are: - Motherboard - CPU (w/ aftermark heatsink if needed) - Aftermarket thermal compound (unless stock has improved these days) - Video Card - RAM - Primary OS drive - PSU - Soundcard (are these worth it these days? Or is onboard fine for most people still?) The primary use of the machine will be gaming. Thanks for any help.
  11. Hey All, My rig is getting fairly old and it's definitely time for an update! I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on what parts you would recommend and why. High level, assume I have approximately a $1,000.00 US budget. I don't need a monitor or peripherals, just the core components. I can honestly reuse my existing case too if that helps stretch the budget. I primarily use this machine for gaming and typically only build a new rig every 5 years or so, so staying power is important. Thanks for the help! Edit: Economies of scale matter too. While I do want staying power, if I increase my budget by 25% for only a 5% performance increase, that may not be worth it. Simply put, if I can get 90% - 95% performance from a $750 dollar system instead of a $1,000.00 system, that would be helpful to know.
  12. Thanks. However, are there any noticeable differences between the 250~ ones and the 350-400 ones (other than a sleaker look?
  13. Hi All, I'm looking for a solid 27' monitor for gaming and other basic windows activities. I'm willing to spend up to $400 if there is a noticeable difference in performance, but if one of the $250~ range monitors is essentially the same thing, then I would prefer to save the money. What would you all suggest? Thanks!
  14. Hi All, What parts do you all recommend for the best $900~ gaming rig? I will need the following parts, the rest I have: CPU Motherboard Ram Video Card PSU Hard drive The case I will be using is large and should be able to fit most components. Thanks!
