  1. I'm trying to set up a PC as a FTP server so I can send files to my friends in Florida, but I'm having a problem. I'm using a wireless access point (Linksys 802.11g Router) to connect out to the Internet. Obviously, my IP address is only local to my home network and given to me via DHCP (from the router). As packets come into the network, via the access point, it just forwards to whichever computer they're intended for. So, do I need to set up a static route to my PC? What do I need to do so my friends can connect to my PC and grab files? I haven't messed around with it too much because I've been busy with work. I figured I should just ask on here so when I do get a chance to mess with it, I'll know what to do. Thanks. ***EDIT 1**** I just found www.portfoward.com which seems to be pretty good. If anybody still wants to comment, that will be fine. ***EDIT 2*** I got everything working good, if YOU need help... I can help you now.
  2. In your opinion, what do you think is better for gaming... Install games on my 10,000 RPM drive (raptor), which has the OS on it? Or, install games on what I call as my storage drive which isn't running Windows? On the Raptor drive you get the benefit of the 10,000 rpms, but has to contend with running the OS. On the other hand you have the 7200 rpm (16mb buffer) storage which doesn't have to share searching and reading with the OS. Which one would I benefit the most from installing the games on?
  3. I finally figured it out. It was really not that hard actually. After I got Windows to recognize my card... I just installed the ralink drivers for my version 4 card (Ralink is the chipset maker for my card). That was the easy part, the hard part was realizing that I had typed the WRONG dang MAC ADDRESS in the router, for filtering. I was only off by 1 stupid number!!! Anyway, I'm glad it's working now.
  4. I am having a hell of a time getting my wireless card installed and working with Windows XP Pro x64. I have a Linksys 802.11b/g wireless PC card (WMP54G). Of course the install kit that it comes with doesn't work in x64. I've been reading around and people seem to be using other generic drivers to get it to work. Another thing is... my card isn't showing up in "Device Manager" it's like the plug-and-play isn't seeing the newely installed card. Can anybody give me some suggestions or anything. I'm getting deparate. Thanks in advance!
  5. I bought the motherboard because I'll be able to upgrade in the future. I don't have any needs currently that'll utilize the full ability of two cards. When gaming gets to the point where I'm starting to struggle, I'll easily be able to buy another 256meg card (which will be cheaper) to handle the needs. Upgradability is important to me when purchasing a motherboard. I tend to keep and use PC's for a long time.
  6. Yeah the card wasn't in there when I took some of the pictures. I think it came a day or two later... thought I had a pic of it installed, but I guess not. Actually, it must still be on the camera. I just threw up 5 or 6 pics really fast. I was more or less just trying to show the phases of the build. I think I took some more pics of it in its complete stage... I'll pull them off the camera sometime and repost.
  7. I just got done building a new PC from scratch. All my parts were odered off of Newegg. If you look in my sig, you'll see the specific names of the parts. This is a pic of the case... I had just installed the PSU. Case again, but with the SLI Motherboard installed. Closer view, starting to come together. Mostly complete here, only thing missing in this pick is the video card which came a day later. Same pic, but this time the outer door is on. Picture with new keyboard, speakers, mouse, mouse pad, and 19" monitor.
  8. I think its a crock a s&%t. No chance they are running those speeds over copper. They would need to do what we are doing, which is installing fiber all over the place. The entire network would need to be fiber, with no copper bottle necks anywhere. By the way that is GigaBIT, not GigaBYTE... 7 bits in a byte so divide 1 billion by 7 and thats the GigaBYTE speeds you would be reaching. I don't believe it for a second that a home user (at this point in time) would be acheiving speeds like that. There is no place in the world that has a more extensive network then the US. I would need more info on this to really belive it. IMO!
  9. NIC stands for "Network Interface Card." It's what allows your computer, printer, etc to connect to the network... putting it very simply. If your computer doesn't have a NIC built in, you can just go to the store and buy one. They are super cheap for a 10/100MBps card. You would open up your computer and install the card in an available PCI slot. Once you have the card installed and the drivers installed... you are now ready to plug the ethernet cable (generally a yellow or blue cable that has a connector on it that looks like a bigger telephone end) between the modem and newly installed NIC. You will not be using the USB method anymore. So in short... (1) Figure out if PC has a NIC installed. (2) If not, buy a card. (3) Install card with drivers. (4) Unplug USB cable and remove completely from modem and PC (5) Plug ethernet cable between computer and modem. (6) Adjust network settings in Windows, should be plenty of info about doing that. Also, try this link, it should bring you up to speed. --> http://computer.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htm
  10. Figure out what kind of wireless router they are using... probably Linksys or D-link or some other popular brand name. Check and see if they are stupid enough to leave their name and pass on the router as the default which is generally "admin" & "admin". You can usually access their router via 192.168.1.1 (Linksys default), etc... unless they were smart and changed it to something else. If you are able to get inside, you should be able change the settings that might help with what your asking. But if you have your firewall up, more then likely you are gonna be ok. It's not like they can trace where the signal is coming from (your NIC card). Actually, you probably could, but I doubt they would do that. If they are dumb enough to leave the name and pass as the default, good chances you are dealing with someone that doesn't know what they are doing anyway.... and I don't think you need to worry about too much. If I think of another way I'll write again.
  11. I just got done building my new PC, you can look at my signature and see everything that I have. I did a lot of research and am EXTREMELY impressed with everything that I have. I've been playing all the new big name games on highest resolution like they were nothing. If you are building a PC for gaming, definitely go with the AMD over the Intel. 3500+ (venice) keeps up with the fastest Intel processors, especially if you overclock it. The AMD's kick out the FPS like a mofo. My entire system, which I consider pretty close to top of the line, cost under $2000. And that included monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. I think it is very important to get the most expensive motherboard possible... maybe I should say best, not most expensive... either way, you know what I mean. In my opinion, having a motherboard that I can grow into over the next couple years is important to me. Wouldn't be financially smart to buy a so-so motherboard and max it out, leaving you very little room for growth. Also, processor isn't really THAT important in gaming. I ran a PIII 700 for 4 or 5 years that was able to keep up with most games... except some of the really high end games of the last year/year and a half. Of course I upgraded everything on it. RAM, HDD, etc. So, in conclusion, rather then worrying about the best processor for gaming, go with more RAM, good mobo, and a high end video card. But like the others said, a 3000+ would be fine, and if you can afford it go with the 3500+... can't hurt. Remember, the 939 technology should be around for a few years so you'll be able to upgrade that processor to a better one for a while. Hope this helps.
  12. I think Newegg hired a guy to sit there and change the price all day. Everytime I go on there its different.
  13. I meant to update this post earlier... but yeah, it got disabled in the BIOS when I flashed it to recogize my Venice chip. I'm not sure why that of all things got disabled in the BIOS when flashing. Oh well, atleast I figured it out and I have freakin sound. Thanks for the reply though.
  14. Hey man I'm going through the same type issue. Here is the forum that I opened up... http://forums.overclockersclub.com/Sound_N...tem-t50481.html ... I didn't see your post until after I posted mine. Hopefully we can figure out whats going on. If I find the answer, I'll post it so you can try it.
  15. I just finished building my new system, but I am having only one problem... sound isn't working. This is the motherboard that i'm using... http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Produ...A-K8NXP-SLI.htm ... it comes w/ 8 channel audio onboard. When I finally got the system all put together and XP SP2 installed I plugged in my speakers and got sound... no problem. After installing drivers, programs, etc... I noticed that the sound stopped working. So, the first thing I checked was the connection in the back, which was good. Nothing had changed. I made sure it wasn't wasn't set on mute in Windows and all the other basic checks... still not working. I downloaded the newest audio driver (Realtek AC97 Codec) from Gigabyte's website and reinstalled... still nothing. Rebooted numerous times... nothing. When I check the audio settings in the Control Panel, it pretty much says there is no device installed. Man, I'm tired of fooling with this S$&t, I just want it to work so I can play some games. Does anybody else have this board or ever experienced a similar situation? Suggestions on a fix would be great. I'll probably end up calling Gigabyte and see what they have to say. All these years of computer experience and I can't even figure out a audio problem... really ticks me off. It's always something itsn't it!?!?!
