Dailybreadman Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 I've tried a new power supply, different ram, prime95, memtest etc etc but they all yield no signs of error. I've had this setup for about a week and a half and only recently has this been occuring. Let's say I play Far Cry. After about 30 minutes it crashes to desktop. I start it up again, bam, restart comp. 3dmark05 doesn't complete the test it simply either crashes to desktop with errors or restarts my computer. Aquamark3 and Pcmark05 work fine however. I've tried a fresh format, memtest passed once, today my friend brought over 2 512 sticks of ram and I still had crashing problems. New PSU = still same problems. Idle temps are: 38 CPU 46 System 50 GPU Full load: 50 CPU 54 SYSTEM 71 GPU (running a game) Here's a link to my specs off new egg but they're also in my sig: http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishli...tle=NEW+UPGRADE Currently however I'm using an Antec Neopower 480W although I'm going to send it back to CompUSA because I thought my old PSU might be the problem but it's not. Also whenever I have a problem I run prime95 right after and it immediately finds an error, something about rounding being .5 expected less then .4. But then I run it again for hours without a problem. It only finds one right after something crashes. I got the latest chipset drivers off nVidia's site as well. Guest gandalf Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 I think the minimum requirement is 520w, but I could be wrong.
Dailybreadman Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Minimum requirement for what?
Toronto1 Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 For the PSU, all that gear needs a hefty power supply. You'll need something kick butt...At least 520 watt. More if possible. There's no such thing as too much!!! ps: That's a hell of a system!!!
Sharp Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Hello, Minimum power supply requirement for the board is 480W. Use the 500W Bluestorm PSU if you still have it. Make sure you plug all 4 power connectors into the board http://dfi-street.com/forum/showpost.php?p...76&postcount=95 - Can you use 1 stick in the orange slot. - In the BIOS can you set the memory voltage to 2.8v GENIE BIOS Setting >DRAM Configuration..................Press Enter = New Menu DRAM Voltage Control.................2.80 V Run MemTest86+.......................Enabled Save and exit. Let memtest run for 3-4 hours. If you get no errors flash to BIOS 623-3. BIOS 615 that you are using has a bug and was removed from the DFI website. http://uploadstore.com/userfiles/sharp/DFI..._BIOS_623-3.exe Run that and it will make the bootdisk. Once the flash has finished, - Turn the PC off - Remove the power cord - Clear the CMOS for 10 minutes. - Place the CMOS jumper back to the save position - Then power the PC Change the memory voltage to 2.8v and try memtest/play a game. If everything is ok, insert the second stick and test again. Also when you insert the second stick, Disable CPC in the BIOS. GENIE BIOS Setting >DRAM Configuration DRAM Frequency Set (MHZ).............200 (DRAM/FSB:1/01) Command per clock (CPC)..............Disabled Do not load any previous CMOS RELOADED setting. See the Power Supply Guide for DFI N4 Ultra/SLI Mobos: http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10854 I would go to the ENERMAX Noisetaker 600W or someting way over the top if I was in the same position. EDIT: sharp is right its 480 min, but bigger is most always always better.
jrp65 Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Yes the minimum PSU is 480. But you really need to look at what that means. You have the latest GPU that may have greater power reqs than the minimum 480w. I don't have the actually thread on this site but if you search on this site or on the net for typical power reqs for your components you should see what the min and max values are for your system. I have 600W I bought my board with the idea that I would be eventually adding more hardware which I have new DVD, hard drives and other stuff. Your system is definately using more power thna mine and you have a "less" capable PSU. PS I am not saying 480w isn't enough I am saying u need to evalutate your reqs and decide if you have enough power to support your rig. Dailybreadman Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 I plugged in all those cords except for the floppy because I don't have a floppy drive. But I will try that memtest and bios or whatnot. Thanks. I don't think I need more power I realy don't want to spend more money.
Sharp Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Use 1 stick +2.8v +memtest. You must plug all 4 power connectors into the board. The floppy one is not for the floppy drive. All 4.
Dailybreadman Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Hmmm I just plugged the floppy thing and ran 3dmark05 with the BIOS settings you said in a thread to a guy who was having a problem with this Corsair ram: GENIE BIOS Setting >DRAM Configuration..................Press Enter = New Menu FSB BUS Frequency....................200 DRAM Voltage Control.................2.8V GENIE BIOS Setting >DRAM Configuration DRAM Frequency Set (MHZ).............200 (DRAM/FSB:1/01) Command per clock (CPC)..............Enabled Cas latency (tCL)....................2.5 RAS to CAS delay (tRCD)..............3 Min RAS active time (tRAS)...........7 Row precharge time (tRP).............3 Row cycle time (tRC).................11 Row refresh cycle time(tRFC).........14 Row to Row delay (tRRD)..............2 Write recovery time (tWR)............3 Write to read delay (tWTR)...........2 Read to write delay (tRWT)...........2 Refresh period (tREF)................AUTO Write CAS latency (tWCL).............1 DRAM Bank Interleave.................Enabled DQS Skew Control.....................Decrease Skew DQS Skew Value.......................0 DRAM Drive Strength..................AUTO DRAM Data Drive Strength.............AUTO Max Async Latency....................6ns Dram Response........................Normal Read Preamble Time...................5ns Idle Cycle Limit.....................AUTO Dynamic Counter......................Disabled R/W Queue Bypass.....................AUTO Bypass Max...........................AUTO 32 Byte Granularity..................Disable (8 Bursts) Except 4 bursts at the end because mine doesn't have an option for 8. Yeah I just ran it and it passed flawlessly, got a score of 8350 or something. Should I try it with normal BIOS settings? Shard Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Did you do the bios update that Sharp suggested? My board was completely unstable with my 7800 till I used the same bios Sharp is suggesting.

Let's not forget 7800s use less power than 6800Us... so it shouldn't be THAT bad. The main issue is not wattage, but the rails. Do some voltmeter tests to make sure your rails aren't being strained out. Do some manual calculations. If your CPU and graphics are being split on a dual rail PSU, check to see that each rail has a high enough amperage rating...
