What the?

Recommended Posts

Weird problem . . . when I shut down the computer for the night and go to boot it up in the morning it gets past the Windows loading screen, but then blanks out. It just goes to a blank screen and stays there. I restart; it says Windows did not started normally what would you like to do? 1: Safe Mode, 2: Safe Mode with Networking Support, 3: Start Windows normally.... blah, blah, blah. Well I go to start Windows normally and it works fine. I try restarting from Windows, it works fine. I try shutting down and rebooting manually, and it works fine. What the hell? It's just on the initial start up when the computer has been turned off for a long period of time. Well, I usually leave my Diablo II: LOD in my Plextor drive so when I turn the computer on, the DVD-Drive spins rapidly probably using a lot of power. However, I kept it in there, restarted and once I got into Windows, it worked fine. Do you think it's a power issue? This started happening yesterday.

This could be anything from a virus/spyware to a hardware problem

First off, I would boot into safe mode with networking and run either MSconfig or Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. (Google it, the latter is much better). Remove all things that are starting up (uncheck them) and reboot..

See if it comes back on in normal mode... If it does then you need to find out what the culprit is by selecting each one and rebooting..

It would also be a good idea to check your even logs too to see if that sheds any light on whats causing the failure..

I don't see anything wrong under event viewer . . . anything specific that I would be looking for?

You see this problem only happens when the computer has been shut off for a long period of time then turned on. There is no way to test to see if anything I do is working because it's fine now. Should I uninstall the NVidia drivers? I had them when I only had the Seagate drive installed and it worked fine, but is it a different ball game when I have the Western Digital with the Seagate?

Sounds like a driver problem. I had BSOD probs on cold boots which I removed the Nivida IDE drivers and used the Windows stock drivers to resolve the problem.

Check your voltage rails to see if they are going +-5%. If they are, then its time to replace that PSU.

How would I check them? In the BIOS or with some program?

Ugh.... I just built this machine.....hopefully I won't have to replace anything.....

I'll uninstall the drivers.
