XP 64bit driver problems with ATI?

Recommended Posts

I'm not exactly sure where to post this so direct me elsewhere if this isn't the place.

I finally installed XP x64 as a dual boot and got the NF4 64bit drivers working great. However, anytime I install that graphics drivers I get a BSOD. I would have to fix it all in safe-mode with Driver Cleaner 3 and then try to reinstall. I tried every CAT and Beta driver ATI offered with no luck. Does anyone know of or have seen this problem with DFI or NF4 boards in general? Any help would be appreciated.

I've had many problems like that with ATI's drivers on both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of XP. ATI's drivers are pathetic, which is the main reason why I don't buy their products. Just looking at the release notes for their drivers scares me away from buying any of their stuff. The worst I've seen was on my friend's computer, he installed the newest catalyst drivers at that time (i think 5.2) and they started corrupting hard drive data, we kept re-installing Windows and it was the same thing each time, it turns out that it was a known issue with the catalyst drivers up to that point, it had something to do with caching in Windows and somehow ATI's video card drivers were corrupting the data (it was listed in their release notes, so it was indeed the drivers causing the problem). I can't think of a single time when nVidia display drivers corrupted my hard drive or prevented my OS from booting (I've used almost every driver from the 12.XX to the 77.XX series), but it seems to happen often with the ATI drivers I use. My advice would be to stay away from the 64-bit catalyst versions 5.6 and 5.7, neither have worked correctly for me, if possible use the earlier versions, they seem to give me less problems (well, at least they install without locking up the OS, or preventing it from booting).

intersting... I've tried every 64-bit CAT driver they have, including the beta's. It doesn't seem to make a difference, BSOD every time  . I guess I'll just forget about 64-bit computing for the time being. So much for Far Cry 64.
