Damn, I must be crazy. Looking for a new gaming monitor

I'm looking for new or refurbished GAMING monitor and I'm in need of some help.

Let me start out by saying the following:

I currently have a Viewsonic 19" A90f+ (something like that) I feel the screen quality is good, BUT I need a larger screen for games. (who am I kidding, I don't need it...I want it)

Weight is not an issue

The 'foot print' is not an issue

Power consumption is not an issue

Heat is not an issue

In-game screen quality is my primary concern. Period.

I've been looking at the following CRT: It's got a large widescreen and some great refresh rates. The only downside of this monitor is that it is not-so-new, or in other words refurbished.

Any opinions or ideas would be very helpful. I spent 6 hours scouring the internet last night looking at reviews, ebay and any other site out there concerning CRTs ranging from 21" to 24".

I guess I need more opinions.

To add to this, I can get the following CRT:

Dell Small Business has the Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24" LCD Monitor for $1199 - 35% off code 629P2JKBS7CWWD = $779 w/ free shipping + tax.

I just don't think I can stomach playing games on an LCD....

The Dell LCDs are very good, the colors aren't perfect when comparing against high-end CRTs, but they're definately acceptable for the vast majority of people when gaming.

I was all ready to order a Dell 2001FP, but came upon a good deal for Sony G520P monitors, at less than half the price than the Dell's. I think I'm going to be sticking with CRTs for a while longer, since I'd love to have the Dell, but have plenty other stuff I could spend the money on.

edit: Though with the Dell monitors, it's much better if you have a video card capable of playing at their native resolution, other resolutions interpolate and look ugly. (The Dell ones do have a nice zoom feature though, so you can play older games in low resolutions with large black bands around the sides of the screen.)

I feel ya on that, I may be putting this lcd onto the secondary desk when my machine is running. It's been at 60hz refresh and I just found it'll support 75, with any luck thats the culprit to choppy fps in crucial hl2 moments.

I would stay away from the LCD's if you are truly after a decent gaming monitor. Even more so when you stray bigger than 17". The refresh times are just not there yet with the bigger LCD's.

That said, I just went with a Viewsonic G220fb 21" for my new gaming monitor and it's just amazing playing BF2 in 1600 x 1200 with everthing set to high.

I use the Viewsonic P225FB, 22" (20" viewable) which supports resolutions up to 2048x1536@75hz. I have played on multiple flat screens from Dell, Viewsonic, Samsung, etc and just haven't been too impressed with the refresh rates or response times.

ExRoadie does have a good point, what games do you play and will they support the higher resolutions or even wide-screen?

Before you get too excited about a wide screen display make sure your video card and games can support the higher resolution and wide screen aspect.

I will have the BGF 7800 GTX in about a week. I will be very upset if the latest and greatest won't support the resolutions. ;)

I pretty much play all the new games that come out.

RTS

FPS

RPG

Turn-based Strategy

Action

Racing

I'm currently playing BF2 with some HFL2 mixed in. I will be playing Dungeon Seige 2 in Mid August.

FYI: I have the Dell 1905FP that I used as a gaming monitor for about 2 days....I switched back to my CRT and haven't looked back..The Dell 1905Fp got rave reviews from Anandtech for a gaming LCD, but I for one would not rave about it...Thank God i only paid $298 shipped for it.

Hmmm, what to do....what to do...

Very happy with mine see sig moved up from a samsung 19in seems like more than just 2 more inches and the quality is far better it is a refurb. I only paid about 150 inc shipping. Until LCD can compete I see no reason to change. I got a better deal and higer quality what more can you ask. I would dowuble check that those monitors have more viewing area and qualityv if so why not if you have the cash.

I think another question I should be asking myself is: "Would I feel comfortable spending $600-$1000 on a refurbished monitor that might already be 2-4 years old?

Gah...maybe I might just go with a NEC 2060-2070SB or a Viewsonic P225FB or a Viewsonic G220fb or a

Gah.

Dell 2010 flat panel and Farcry look REALLY good. If you want a dell wait till around Christmas. I picked mine up with the dell 25% off coupon for around $600.If you want max performance the CRT is still king but the LCD is much easier on the eyes after hours of use. It also is not a space heater and no burn in. I have a nice CRT and I like the LCD better.
