keithyr Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 hi all just found this forum and thought i'd share this problem. recently bought the following system: A64 3500+ dfi lanparty ultra D (using onboard sound) 7800gtx - gigabyte. 1gig corsair twin x (currently being rma'd as board wouldnt boot when installed and showed as error in memtest so using 1gig kingston value temporarily) akasa paxpower 460w psu. 2x80gig maxtor HDD LG cd-rom Liteon DVD/RW got a major problem at the moment. ive only tried this on two gams (bf1942 and bf2) but when i get the first load up / options screen the game/pc just freeze and i have to reboot. This seems to happen when video is enabled. This happens within 5-10 seconds. I also noticed something odd in windows media player - when playing a music video the video puases and tries to change modes like when loading a game and switching to 3d mode. tried the latest nvidia drivers all to no avail. any ideas what could be causing this ? system is not overclocked. ive not updated to the latest bios or nvidia nf4 drivers but these are the next points to try. Im a bit of a newbie when it comes to this so can someone point me in the direction of the correct ones to use. thanks for any help as this is doing my nut in. cheers keith
noktekniq Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 is this a 24pin naive powersupply... also u may need a new psu since it's not giving enough juice. 460 is low considering thos higher end stuff u have in ur rig right now ur one gig ram need to be set in bios with timings... so ur ram isn't a prob... but i would say definitely psu
dosu Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Try a different game, bf2 is full of problems and i dont think thats a good game to test a new pc
SaFrOuT Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 first u may try to update BF@ with the latest 1.02 patch secondly this is mostly a s/w problem so tell us which versions of chipset and display driver r u using ? and anyway ur card is less than the minimum req for the DFI nf4 beside u have a beast v/c which needs a lot fo power, how the hell u spent al of this money on ur system specially the v/c and u wasn't able to spend less than 50$ more to get a better PSU with more watt please show us the A output of ur PSU on the 12vrail which u can find on the sticker on the left side of ur psu
jec Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 yea, its prolly ur ps. Get something like an ocz or a fortron bluestorm at least 500 watts.
keithyr Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 thanks for the quick replies. at work right now but im sure the 12 v rails have 14A and 15A (2 rails). tbh i thought a decent 460w psu would be ok. (ouch) also the 7800 has two molex connectors which im powering of seperate cable looms from the psu as reccommended. i have a spare 400w psu which came with the case - is it poss to use 2 psu's in a single case (prob a stupid question). i will check the chipset driver tonight but im using the 77.62 drivers from nvidia. (i noticed on the gigabyte site they have 71.84 drivers up as latest for the card so might give them a try. i also tried this on BF 1942 / Desert combat which gives me the exact same problems. software or psu seem like the only two areas to try - im a bit wary of chipset / bios updates as never done this before but will ask my computer literate mate to do this. SaFrOuT Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 first use the latest stable vga driver from invidia which was released for ur vga card specially get it from here ==> http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.72.html secondyl using two PSU won't give anything better cause ur cpu + mobo + vga card needs more than 500watt and all u can do with 2 psu is to let one of them to power the HDD + CDrom + fan which won't solve or won't cover what ur system needs, OR u can mood 2 psu to work as one but this needs a really expert electronic eng and 14 A + 15 A is not even enough since they both combined won't give more than 26A which is still not enough for ur system try to run prime test 2 or run OCCT and see if the system gives u error or not
keithyr Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 well have all latest nforce 4 and forceware drivers and latest bios from dfi - pc still keeps freezes when entering games. Also hangs when trying 3dmark 05. only thing left to try is with an upgraded power supply which i'm going to take to my local pc repair shop to get done. anyone else think of any other possible issues ? SaFrOuT Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 dude this 460watt is not even close to the minimum req. for nf4 based mobos from DFI since they recommand a 480watt psu for normal system with moderate VGA card and since u got the beast 7800GTX i think the minimum u need is a 500watt like an Antec v2 or OCZ PowerStream 520 watt with A on the 12v rail not less than 32 since ur card needs lots of power when @ load now i think that ur PSU is the problem, how many A does ur PSU have on the 12v rails ?
