Recommended Posts

i was in a hurry to get out the door.. and while it was still in the process of shutting down.. i flipped the pwr button the the surge protector. next day.. wouldnt boot.

kept gettin squggly lines..

couldnt get to safe mode.

could get to bios.

got mad.

got madder.

was really perturbed..

had it boot to cd rom first.. put in windows cd.. formated..and reinstalled.

now.. everything seems to be working fine.. except. for..

it finds my second cd rom.. sometimes.. and while its in use.. it forgets its there and i get errors.. i double click on my computer and it only shows one cd rom.

everything is hooked up right..

and i also have a few things in device manager now with ? marks ..

-------- other pci bridge device.

--------pci mem controller

--------sm bus controller.

any help would be great thanks.

With what you are seeing in the device manager, you might try installing/reinstalling your nForce chipset drivers.

was running fine.. and then.... Those words are scary, very clever thread title :)

Next time that happens try the repair console... booting from Windows CD (with sata floppy if you are running RAID), do exactly as trying to reinstall windows but when it ask you if you want to enter Repair Console press R, then select 1 for the c:/Windows installation.

Once there run CHKDSK with /P to try to fix any disk problems; I think its /p, but you can type /? and check out all the options for CHKDSK, I think there are only two.

For me it has solved many problems avoiding reinstalling the whole thing.

ok. it didnt fix the missing dvd rom problem... i hit my computer.. and i see my hard drives.. c: and d:

i also see dvd rom e:

and i see dvd rom burner f:

-----

i go to install a game.. dungeon seige.. and the cd just spins and spins.. i finally control + alt + del and force a shut down and the e: is gone.

or.. it will begin the install.. and at some point into it.. sometimes on disc 1 and sometimes on disc 2.. i get a read error.. and again.. when i close it.. the e: is gone.

also.. i bought a dvd movie and wanted to back it up so i could keep the original as i do with all my games and movies, and use the back up to play them..

sooo.. i put the dvd in e: -- the dvd rom.. a blank dvd in f: -- the burner,. and started the program dvd shrink. again the dvd just spins and spins.. when stops.. i look under my computer and whaalaa.. no e: just c , d and f.

any help would be great. thanks

I would suggest:

1. Swap out the IDE cable for whatever ur CD/DVD drives are on.

2. try running one at a time and see what happens.

Cuz if none of these suggestions work, guess what, the IDE channel/slot the drives are connected to are shot and in that case its RMA time.
