is having a 20 pin PSU on 24 pin Mobo a big problem?

Recommended Posts

Hey ppl... I recently changed my 420W PSU for a 520W one... the problem is that the 520W one doesn't have the 24pin power cable my mobo requires... (it has only 20 pins)... Computer worked fine for about 5 days, and then I got a windows crash, and was never able to boot windows since then... I get some missing windows system file error during boot. May this problem have any relation with the PSU issue?

Thanks for reading :)

Could well be. windows will blue screen and crash if you dont have enought juice in the right places! Have you got a 24pin PSU to test with?

More than likely. Can you please give the rated Amperage on each positive rail of the PSU. I.E. +12v, +5v, +3.3v rails.

The moderaters of this forum have specifically said they will not support any user running a native 24-Pin ATX motherboard with a 20-Pin PSU (Even with the adaptor).

I highly suggest upgrading your PSU to a native 24-Pin ATX connector that is atleast 520Watts and has a good value for each of the positive rails. Remember don't go cheap on the new PSU either, that will only lead to more problems in the future. Good luck. :)

Yea, I got one right here... I just didn't want to mess around things till I was sure this may be the problem... Other than that, could it be anything else?

Lets not speculate on other possibilities until we've eliminated the PSU as the culprit.

Also, you still might get that error after the new PSU is installed because some of the files may have been corrupted. I would suggest doing a reformat of the HD and reinstall the OS after you install the new PSU.

If it fixes the issue altogether then that's great. Please report back with your results.

Ok.. but this is the 2nd PSU i buy :(

It's the first time I assembled a PC myself, and I didn't know the PSU could give me so much trouble! I'm running low on cash, but if I am to buy another PSU, I want it to be the last I buy. Would you please give me some options?

Ok, I will do that, but there are some work files I can't possibly lose! How can I backup these files not being able to access windows? I've tried installing windows in another folder, but it says C: is corrupted, and it won't let me install it! Please, these files are very important! Is there anything I can do?

Can you boot into safe mode? To do that, press F8 before the windows loading screen, and that should bring up more options for you to get into the OS. You should then be able to back up what you need. Good luck.

You could also try to repair your install by booting from the windows xp disk and selecting repair.
