x850 xtpe or 6800 series

I have the oppurtunity to purchase an x850xt pe for around $375 :nod:. Would getting that card over a 6800 series ultra or gt be worth it?

I assume yes but wanted to get opinions on my assumptions. Im not brand loyal to ATI or Nvidia either so that doesnt matter.

I wouldnt' do it. Your 6800U isa sweet card. and 380 bucks is a good deal but not for a couple of FPS more. IMO, Which you asked :)

Edit:

I thought you had the Ultra alrady, should have read your sig fully. I would get the 850xt over the Ultra if you are going to upgrade.

I have had both cards so can speak to the card differences on an otherwise identical hardware setup...

The 6800 ultra is nice indeed and does have ps 3.0 support but...the x850 xt pe kicks it butt in my opinion. I chose to keep the x850 because it was just noticably better in the games I play CS Source, UT 2004, Far Cry, BF 2, etc. I actually switched both cards in and out and did benchmarking and game play tests and there really was no comparison. I will say this though...be prepared to spend a couple bucks on an arctic cooling silencer or zalman gpu cooler because the x850's heatsink SUCKS! It sounded like a dustbuster and did not do a very good job on temps. After I stuck the ac silencer on, my clocks went up and I cannot hear the fan at all even at 100%

I love this damn card!!

I guess if I had to choose one I'd say the x850 xt pe. I mean that's the full pe version, a very powerful card, certainly more powerful than the 6800 u. And there won't be that many games coming out that will use ps3 too heavily, and the x850 xt pe will run those just fine anyway, albeit perhaps not as much eye candy. But it will be able to handle the high resolutions and high af/aa better than the 6800 u.

So I guess I say they're both good, but for that price I think the x850 xt pe.

so you got an x850xt? i hope so cuz i love mine. as soon as i got it i downloaded the latest omega drivers and overclocked it to x850xt PE speeds, 540/1180. played some games, did some tests. using the real-time graph monitor in the ATI tray tools that's part of the omegas, i watched the temps very closely. when i saw that load temps were fine, i flashed the bad boy with an x850xt PE bios. now i'm OCing even beyond that, 550/1200.

the stock heatsink on it has been nothing but money once i created a profile in the ATI tray tools for the fan. since i did this, load temp never >62C.

50C = 50%

55C = 75%

60C = 88%

65C = 100%

my point is, the card is great and the fan is too, and download the omega drivers. i'm playing BF2 at 1280x960, all graphics options on high, except for shadows, AAx4.

good luck!

I'm thinking about, thinking about updating my 6600gt to this 850xt pe, but hearing people say they are getting 7800's for around 500??

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814121532

I'm not in a big hurry to update ... what does ati have on the horizion (I know crossfire is coming, but what about a single card that competes with the 7800?)

Are there better prices out there on the 850xt?
