Sgt_Strider Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 I just bought my second DFI NF4 Ultra-d motherboard yesterday. I just installed it with the default HSF. Little did I know that I forgot to plug in the fan adapter, I boot up the system and went to the BIOS. I checked the temp and it was at a blazing hot 102 degrees Celcius! At first I thought it was no biggie and it's probably a lot cooler than what the BIOS stated. I decide to just check around the BIOS while it was at 102 degrees Celcius for about 5 minutes. After that I decide to install windows, but I got an error and got scared and turned off the system. Then I felt the heatsink and it almost burned my index finger. It was blazing hot and at the same time I realize the fan wasn't on. I plugged it in and made sure my 120mm case fan right next to the hsf was at max and temp dropped to 50 degrees celcius. Things seems to be ok though, but my oversight for about 5-7 min. at the BIOS and my attempt at windows could have caused damage to my motherboard? I didn't smell anything burned or see anything that leads me to think of it. I'm just a little paranoid after seeing the numbers and feeling the heatsink. I guess I won't know until I run a stability test? Thanks.
Angry_Games Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 first thing is you should always know about your cpu...AMD's fault tolerance is good up to about 70C (ie read before you put stuff together and understand what you are working with, and when you see stuff way out of spec like that temp, you shut down immediately and correct it if possible) second...if the machine runs fine, I probably wouldn't worry about it much
malinois1 Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 WOW that is some hot . Don't worry about the mobo too much it is the CPU you should be concerened about. Hopefully it will be OK though

I have years of experience, but I'm just amazed that I forgot to do such a simple thing. I don't know if everything is running fine, but it is installing windows as I type this message. Hopefully it will be OK though I'll wait for Windows to finish installing and then shut down the system to let the heatsink cool down. Then tomorrow morning I'll take off the heatsink and see if there are any signs of burns on the mobo and processor. If everything appears normal, should I take it as a sign that I lucked out? If everything appears normal, should I take it as a sign that I lucked out? external heat damage will be to the extent that the cpu will not boot up again (and/or pins get melted right off the cpu into the socket) if your rig boots I would not worry too much about removing it and checking it (you can though, it is up to you) internal heat damage is different...the thing might boot up, and would show no signs of external damage (black spots or melted pins etc), but might act foolish and crazy from here on. get all your stuff installed and just use it for a day or five and see if it acts funny or just...acts like a computer should

I tried formatting my computer 3 times and both times I'll get a BSOD with the following error message: STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF79F6528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I just shut down the computer by pressing the power button and I'll take the HSF off to see what's going on. Sgt_Strider Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 I just took off the heatsink and everything appears fine to me. The processor looks alright too despite the high temp that it suffered. The thing that caught my attention though is that there seems to be dots on the motherboard. Whether it was on the mobo or not before I install it, I'm not sure. It's very small and I see a line of them going diagonally lower right. It's not specs of dusts or anything, but looks like dots engraved on the motherboard. I tried to use my finger nail and gently feel it, but I can't because it's too small. Should that be a sign of concern?

In the mean time, can you tell me what that error message mean?
