MrSparkle Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Putting together a new system (parts as specified below) and I think I'm getting memory errors. Here's what has happened so far: I was having problems getting it to post consistantly + BSOD errors while trying to install windows XP. (dual channel config on 1&3 (yellow slots)) I moved the RAM to the 2&4 (orange) slots which seemed to fix the intermittent posting problem, but I'm still getting IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD errors during the install of XP. I've changed the BIOS settings to those outlined by RGone here: here. I haven't changed the Genie Bios settings yet. I've noticed the RAM gets very hot when running the memtest software (no errors reported on that). Maybe this is a byproduct of the copper heat spreaders, but the RAM gets too hot to touch. I'm just wondering what the best course of action is. Should I try to install XP with one stick of RAM? Flash my BIOS? (I'm running 310 now, does going to anything more recent improve memory compatibility? Flashing the BIOS would be a pain as I don't have a floppy drive handy) or should I try and explicitly specify my RAM and CPU settings in the BIOS? I'm not trying to overclock here, I just want a stable box. What would be good settings to go with in the Genie BIOS? Seems like I'm not the only one with this problem (which I guess is a good thing).

AbsoLoot Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 IRQL_ errors are driver related, period. If you knew that, you might have already known to run a sigverif and find out what drivers are causing it, but I don't have the time to explain it, but that will hopefully get you in the right direction. Run a eventvwr, and see what system errors correspond with teh time of hte errors, and look for clues to waht driver is causing it, but there may be none. Sigverif is the only way to knowwhat one is causing it, but it is a driver causng a resource conflict.

red930 Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Whereabouts does the error occur during the installation? Or is it at random points? Also, are there any other added devices, such as a PCI sound card or USB device, installed/plugged-in during installation? MrSparkle Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Whereabouts does the error occur during the installation? Or is it at random points? Also, are there any other added devices, such as a PCI sound card or USB device, installed/plugged-in during installation? The IRQL error occurs at the beginning of the install process, when it is copying over files. I've also had it occur immediately after selecting the "Install XP" option in the first menu. No USB devices hooked up, I do have an Audigy soundcard plugged in though.
saintcamber Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 I was having this same problem yesterday, and driver reinstalls fixed it absolutely for me. I'd go through that again, just to make sure.
JfRsQ Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 When Im getting this problem during windowsXP install, Im usually disabling everything in bios that is not needed: USB, sound, both NVLAN and marvell one, unused SATA ports, etc. and running everything on Optimal settings. The board seems to be really picky during winXP install and in most case so far on mine, I need to fight with it to get it install over there. BSOD during install was a first to me in the 5-6 mobos I played on XP. I remember of one of those install where the NVLan were causing the IRQ LESS or EQUAL during the setup  This is without counting the number of re-tries it takes to the install process to find this damn raidmtfg.ini or something like that on the damn floppy when it is looking for Raid drivers...... wtf with that? My only advice is this one: Once you will ever get to the windows desktop after a successful install, make a Ghost Image or whatever program that will image your hdd. mack73 Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 I disagree. It could be memory or CPU related. <---------- agrees as well Try turning the mem voltage up .1 and see if it continues. Also I was getting BSOD's when installing XP, turned out to be because of my CD-ROM. If you have a spare, try using that
AbsoLoot Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 LOL - disagree if you want, voltage isn't going to miraculously fix dma/irq resoure conflicts, but yeah, try it. Acording to Microsoft, and their certified techincians like me, there are no 2 causes of it. Windows setup takes drivers too.
