Cooling Solutions: Memory

Recommended Posts

thats a LITTLE too out of the way, im trying to do something simple without too much cutting ect. i just want to cool the ram off for now. later on ill go with that extreme stuff and do blow holes ect.

thanks, but please more basic way of cooling the ram without running open case 24/7.

One thing I would try would be to bolt another fan on your CPU heatsink using one or two holes of the CPU fan so that fan would hang over your ram.

This is exactly what i did when i was using a XP120. Your lowest dimm will be fine under that XP90, its just the upper dimm that needs to be cooled. I used a 80mm fan attached to the fan on the XP like mentioned above. I used a little allu strip with 2 holes in it. Attach the little fan to 1 end, the other end to the hole on the XP90 fan. Bend it so the 80mm fan is an inch away from the upper dimm blowing over it. Very easy and does the job. There's plenty of space for that. If 80mm is too big on a XP90, try a stock AMD hsf fan.

With the Mach on im using this one, works fine as well. http://www.pccasegear.com/prod669.htm

OK...

::Not responsible if anything happens to your cpu::

You can try this reverse the cpu fan...

Most fans blow downward toward the cpu core, pushing the heat out of the sides, and onto the ram,if you are not o/cing it should not be a problem, it my add a couple degrees to the cpu temp, but I have actually heard of it working better in some instances..

The reason to reverse is:

1- Stop the hot air from blowing on the ram

2-it will pull cooler air across the ram and then into the heatsink and up/out towards the exhausts

and FYI, you would reverse it by turning it over (just in case you thought I ment to switch wires or something)

This could help you out, or not...

Just watch the cpu temps, check them before and after the switching of the fan, if there is no big difference in temps, then it will be fine, then you need to see if it actually helped your memory!

Well one way would be to mount the holes of one fan into the top holes of the existing fan and kind of stack them (I think someone mentioned this above). Ignore the dots, but you can get an idea of what I mean. All you would have to do is insert two bolts connecting the two.

My layout is very similar and I was able to fit a 92mm fan next to the CD ROM, blowing at along the RAM slots. I used the ATX power cord to hold it in place.

i read your responces and took action immediately.

as someone said about the stock fan, i took that off of the stock heatsink (which i will never use) and i got myself some bendable wire, and led myself to a suspended type fan. 92mm was way too big, so i think its an 80 mm or so fan that im using. (its smaller than 92 mm).

here are some pics, if you have more reccomendations i will appreciate it.

- the last 2 pictures show best how i put the fan in place.

i will try and see how my memory temperatures are as time progresses.

thanks, if you have more reccomendations i encourage you to share them with me.

PS. the fan that is cooling the ram, is running about 3300 RPM, is that good enough? bad? i dont think its too bad, thats not slow speed.

Nice job & What are temps now ?

Are those twisty ties in the photos ? (bread ties ? ) Nooooooooooooo ~!

Get some Zip ties/electrical cable ties as twisty ties have metal cores. *(and for stability I would take the upper loop around the entire PS wireing.)

I paid US $6.00 for 100 plastic neon 8 inch ties and they last a couple cases per pack.

The price of never having to worry about a random short from your mod is cheap.

Pay it.

Plus once you tension the zip ties, you dont have to worry about fan vibration allowing sag over time.

i just ran a 3dmark on my computer, 03 to be exact for a "small full load" and i felt the ram while the test was going and it was hot as always, it wasnt AS hot as before, but still warm. i have a feeling this means i wont be able to overclock or do anything like so in my future because of this hot ram and i cant reall do anything about it (i dont think)... adding a small powerful fan like the one i just added did nothing but ide say cooled my ram externally by like 2 or a few degrees.

i need ways to cool this ram the best to its ability. someone please help me soon :(
