berto Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 I have an old IBM Aptiva lying around and i was wondering if it would be good to use as a game server. The Specs are: AMD K62 233Mhz 64mb ram 2 gig HD Onboard video (ATI) and sound Win95, however can be upgraded to 98SE Ive seen sites that say the use old Pentuim 1s for game server but i never saw anything about about using old AMD processors for this task. sYstEmATiC Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 (edited) youmight be able to get away with it if you had more ram but i dont think so....i am running a 933mhz p3 with 512mb pc133 ram and a 20gig hdd on a Asus CULS-2C mutherboard for my server and at times i have seen it shoot up to 50% usage of the cpu when running cs 1.6 deticated server and it doesnt take a lot to run it so i dont think it would work out. bigred Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 lol I run a dual PIII 800e on a gigabyte 6bxd motherboard for my game server. give it 1gb pc100, 4 80gb 7200rpm drives and 4 more 100gb 7200rpm drives running win2k server. I can barely run a dedicated server for Q3, UT, and UT2003 at the same time... it maybe time to retire that one and move game serving over to the dual athlon Dual mp 2400+ 4gb pc2100 on thier ava266dls motherboard, 4 120gb 10k maxtors AND 8 300gb 10k maxtors on a sperate IDE raid controller. too bad it leaves me with no choice but to load all software via the network or an external scsi or firewire cdrom on these systems. Yes I am MCSE certified, YES I have 5 servers in my basement, and NO I do not run a porn site off them. MP3's and DIVX movies only from the dual MP, the dual PIII 600eb is the PDC, the dual PIII 800e is the game server, the PIII 1ghz is a print server and fax manager with limitted file serving, and the old PII 333 is the system with the tape drives (yeah it's got a 2gb drive and all the other bays are for the dat tape drives in it). sYstEmATiC Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 you know its funny, almost all of the p2's i have heard of,seen or worked on had 2-6gb hdds in it but when we got our p2 400mhz with 128mb pc100ram and a 16mb voodoo banshee, it came with a 13 gig hdd. bigred Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 P2 with the bx chipset would run as high as 120gb with a bios flash on some models. it's really upto the board maker to make it work for you.
berto Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 So i guess my old IBM wont cut it. Maybe i could find another use for it. Could it possibly be used for a cheap webserver? Ive seen people using PocketPCs with broken screens on them as a cheap webserver and those usually had aroun 150-200mhz chips with 16-32mb of ram. Otherwise whos got some ideas on what to do with it? bigred Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 best thing to do with it: get in contact with a local nonprofit organization like a church or private school. I didn't pay taxes a year ago because I donated so much equipment to a school. they wrote it off at purchase price NOT current value, which is the common thing they do now. they'll write it off for you at ~$800 or so
LobbDogg Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Either that or you could turn it into a router using Linux or a pre compiled version of Linux such as Smoothwall or BBI Agent which are both free to use and download. I am currently using an AMD K6-2 233mhz for my router and it works great.
