cooling the northbridge with card in the way?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know of any small heatsinks or alternate cooling options for the NB when a card is in the way? There's virtually no clearance and as a result my temps on the NB are around 117-120F.

Amazingly, I took the grills off the front of my Thermaltake Armor case blocking the 120mm fan and temperatures dropped immediately 9 degrees...

I'm sure once my XP-90 arrives (suck not blow!) and additional PCI cooler, temps should drop to ~100.

Even i faced the same problem,

Here's what i did,

i got a powerful 120MM Fan.

It has Current rating of 0.72A,some cheapo chinese make..

I put it at the bottom of the case, blowing air directly on the chipset.

Interestingly the temperatures dropped significantly.

Earlier i used to get around 53c for chipset @ 2.5GHz

but now it refuses to go beyond 45c @ full load.

Even though this is not a great solution for the problem, but who cares as long as it gets the job done...

I also have the problem of the 6800GT card actually sits on the chipset fan, i'm getting temps of around 50C at idle.

There is no Northbridge and Southbridge on the nForce4 chipset. Everything runs via one chip which according to nVidia is more efficient.

However, have no fears about the existing cooling solution since it's a state-of-art product. More details here

If you're getting unusually high temperatures, check to make sure the there are not protrusions (teeth) on the bottom of the graphics card which are preventing the fan from spinning properly. I had this problem with my card and had to file off couple of millimeters of the PCB to fix it.
