ricey Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 Hi people My Thermalright XP90 finally arrived today. I'm going to lap it to remove the nickel plating on the heat sink base. My reasoning is that the nickel plating is just another barrier between the copper base and the cpu. The heat sink base appears to be totally flat. Am I wasting my time, or (worse) harming things? tia, ricey

ricey Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 Thanks AG I thought I might be wasting my time ; I just installed the untouched XP90 onto to my very mildly overclocked A64 3000+ winnie with a tiny dollop of Arctic Silver 5. My cpu idle temp has dropped from 31-32 degrees C to 24-25 degrees C . That's only 3-4 degrees higher than my room temperature. Cheers, ricey
SaFrOuT Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 yes it is a wasting of time but anyway i lapped my Tt Tower112 cause it doesn't come as good as the XP-
charlie22911 Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 heatsinks can come in pretty bad shape, if you can feel grooves with your finger laping might be a good idea, otherwise the results will be 2°-5° at the most
CJ4 Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 My XP-120 had a warped base. Temps dropped around 4°C after lapping. You can see if you have a warped base by reflecting graph paper off of the bottom and seeing if the lines are straight or not. davidhammock200 Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 Alpha, Swiftech & Thermalright HS's should NEVER need lapping, if it does RMA it.
CJ4 Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 But lapping is so therapeutic and it looks so nice when you're finished! CJ

lowfat Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 99% percent of the time lapping is a waste of money, however thermalright did sent out a bad batch of heatsinks a few months back that had warped bases, which a good lap might be required. nst6563 Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 my xp90 had horrible ridges on the base which you could feel without using your fingernails. Spent 6-8 hours (don't remember...I was watching the LOTR movies at the same time) lapping it and the end result was a 4-5c drop in load temps (went from ~40c to 35c-36c). Idle temps are low enough that my Ultra-D shuts off the cpu fan (shut off is at 25c) now.
soundx98 Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 My XP-120 certainly didn't look like any other ThermalRight base I've seen. Not Impressive at all. I usually lap my HS hoping for just a lil bit cooler. Makes me feel better that I put forth the effort. But I put the XP-120 on "stock" and have been very pleased with the results. I purchased an XP-90 a while ago and just pulled it out for some major lapping while getting ready for another build. thought the base looked like crap. sorry but it sure LOOKED like it need some lapping. looks great now and glad I spent the extra effort. Got a lil carried away with a 3.5" drive cover as well http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread...4500#post154500
