reisichi Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Can someone look over this list of parts and see if there are any issues that I may run into when I start building tomorrow? Board: DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-DR CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice (using stock HSF) PSU: Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Memory: OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2 (2x512MB) (TCC5?) Video: PNY Geforce 6600GT 128MB (PCI-Express) (SATA HD, DVD+-R, CD-R, FDD, case, etc.) After searching on several boards (here, Anandtech, OCZ), I don't think I will run into showstopping problems for the most part - except for the memory (configuration, TCC5??) and PSU (I'm not running SLI, so the Antec SP 2.0 should be enough?). Do the settings here posted by AndyT of OCZ work well (stock) with the memory I chose? Should I upgrade the BIOS before tweaking or anything else? (Note: I don't know the version; I haven't even taken the parts out of the box!) Could someone confirm that I'm good to go? This is my first build, btw. I don't expect that I'll be overclocking just yet, nor do I plan to.... Many thanks in advance to those who reply with their insight. digitaal Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 I would like to know this as well because i just ordered the exact same system as you
oliveryochest Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 Looks good for the most part, but cannot really tell you if you will be trouble free or not. You really just have to test for yourself. Some people run fine the first time, while others just run into problems. So we really can't give you a definate answer till you run it for yourself. Just remember to follow the Sticky's when you build to make your setup run smoother.
cpuz Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 I can tell you outside of the psu and vid card, I basically had the same system as you (it has changed since then) but I had absolutely zero, nada problems after i built the system. That's not to say you won't but you asked, and I'm telling you that my build was problem free.
Guest burningrave101 Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 You may or may not have to tweak the DRAM settings to get the system stable at stock speeds. I would suggest going to the OCZ forums and writing down all the recommended settings for your RAM @ 200Mhz before you start the build. txmale36 Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 i would try to get the 3500 if i could.
PSS Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 i would try to get the 3500 if i could. 40% more $$ for 10% performance? 3200+ is perfectly priced.
reisichi Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 i would try to get the 3500 if i could. All the reviews that I read said to go for the 3200+ based on price and performance. Besides, this is just a system for me to use in the meantime so I can get away from using my laptop all the time. I'm skimping a little on this since I'm waiting for the X2's to get cheaper And I've already purchased the parts - they've been sitting in the box from Newegg since Friday morning. You may or may not have to tweak the DRAM settings to get the system stable at stock speeds. Yeah, I found a post on the OCZ forum by AndyT and printed out that particular post. Seems like I'll have to, from what I've read... Thanks to everyone who replied - it's reassuring to know that things look okay so far. Just have to wait for the case and the optical drives to get in tomorrow. This is gonna be real interesting. reisichi Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Okay, my build went pretty smooth, everything seems to be running. However, everything seems to be running quite warm in comparison to other users - CPU idles at ~38C and spikes to ~50C occasionally under load. And, wow, it is loud. Cool'N'Quiet doesn't seem to work after enabling it in the BIOS, installing the driver from AMD and setting to "Minimal Power Management". I followed the instructions posted by A_G but they don't work : I'm thinking about picking up a ThermalRight XP-90 and a 92mm Panaflo to replace the stock HSF (along with AS5 and ArctiClean to clean off the thermal pad), maybe 120mm/80mm fans to replace the stock ones that came with the case. So, the question is, should I throw down more money for these other parts? Any recommendations on 120mm/80mm fans that are quiet + move a lot of air + have RPM sensors? Any way to enable Cool'N'Quiet properly?
