vppreacher Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 All, Started putting my DFI system (Specs in Sig) together this weekend, and after installing Windows XP Pro, I immediately went to install SP2. Everything went fine, but after the install and reboot, the computer hangs at the loading screen. I'm not overclocking at all. Everything seems to work fine until I install either of the Service Packs. Also, I can boot into Safe Mode fine. Here is what I've tried so far: XP Home and XP Pro More voltage for the memory Underclocking the memory All the suggested memory settings from RGone and Angry's threads Updating the firmware on my Plextor SATA DVD Burner Disconnecting my Plextor SATA DVD Burner Switching the USB jumpers to 5VSB Connecting all four power connectors I have some G.Skill TCCD on the way, but the only other thing I can think to try is different BIOSs. Anyone have this happen and fix it? Thanks for any help or advice.
cmay119 Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 Have you ran memtest to see if the memory is developing errors? I've heard the nForce4 motherboards are very picky about memory and this could be what's happening here. Do you have any other sticks of memory to try? Have you tried different ram slots to see if that resolves your issues?
vppreacher Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 Sorry. I did run a full memtest on the PNY stick. It found no errors. I have tried other memory slots, but same thing. The system hangs at the OS loading screen.
Fire-N-Ice Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 sounds to me like maybe the os installed a wrong driver and is having problems loading it, since it loads in safe mode. Go into safe mode, check device manager, and look for any "!" indicating a problem, if none, then I would uninstall a bunch of stuff from there, reboot and re-load drivers, making sure they are the correct drivers of course
vppreacher Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 I forgot to mention also I originally tried to get the board to boot with some older Corsair XMS PC3200. I couldn't anywhere with that RAM. I think it's the memory personally, because I've tried XP Home and XP Pro as well as SP1 and SP2. I have gotten the same lack of OS bootup with overclocking and it's always been fixed by upping the voltage or lowering the overclock. Neither in this case has worked. Edit: I haven't loaded any drivers. I just load the OS, then the Service Packs, and then I get lockup.
vppreacher Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Update: Tried slip streaming SP2 into XP Pro and everything loaded fine. However, on the second reboot, the system locked up again while loading Windows.
red930 Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 See this thread for pointers... http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6615 Read through it since there may be some things that don't pertain to your setup.
vppreacher Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 Thanks, exRoadie. That is a very good thread and I followed it very closely from the get-go. Unfortunately, it hasn't cleared up the lockup issue. I know it isn't my CPU overheating as well, because it stays at 38C. I get my new memory tomorrow, so hopefully that clears it up. If it doesn't, I'm going to try the Silicon Image SATA controller and another hard drive. Any ideas or help is greatly welcome and appreciated. red930 Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 Just wait for the new memory since that seems to be your breaking point. Thanks, exRoadie. vppreacher Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 Well, as it turns out it was neither the memory nor the Plextor SATA DVD Drive. It was actually the Maxtor DiamondMax SATA hard drive. I have since replaced that with a Western Digital SATA Raptor and everything loads good and fast. Thanks for the help and suggestions.
