Murd Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Hey guys, saw alot of posts regarding the Patriot memory PEP1G3200LL. Unfortunately too late as I've already purchased it. Might have to RMA. It shows the timing as 2-3-2-5 and I had to go to 2.5-3-3-6 to get it to boot to windows. Here's my story... Ordered a A64 3700, DFI Lanparty UT 250GB NF3 board, and 2 sticks of this memory. Get it all 2 days later and tear apart my system to install it. Stock bios sees the memory as 333 not 400, read manual, np set to 200 manually. Try to install XP... BSOD... System won't start now. Detects my video card and freezes... Reset CMOS, try again.. same stuff... Put my old 2x512 Kingston ValueRam CL3 stuff. Install XP flawlessly. Go to DFI's website, DL BIOS and flash it. Put the PEP stuff back in it detects it as 400 now GREAT!! BSOD on windows load... Cussing ensues... Put back the 2x512 so I can browse the web. Can't find ANYONE who's tried this combo, just alot of "has anyone tried this?" or "can't get it to work". Tried a few of the suggestions like turning off the CPU throttling and ... Something in the Memory disabled... sorry can't remember the exact wording on it offhand. STILL BSOD on XP load, oh SP2 btw updated as much as I could thru windows update. SO I try relaxing the timing, 2.5-3-3-6 XP loads! THANK GOD! Seems a bit glitchy tho. Some things take forever to load while others load immediately. NOW that you have my story, here's my question... I know VERY LITTLE about RAM timing other than the lower the number the better. Could I get some help on what settings I should relax even more? I'm tempted to go to CL3... Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.
Guest Blooz1 Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Murd - I've found it to be very difficult to get any info on Patriot memory if it's not the XBLK that supposedly has TCCD chips. This company seems to be VERY close-mouthed about their products! I have a 1Gb (2x512) kit of Patriot PDC1G3200ELK that I got on sale at ChiefValue. It's marked right on the sticks as 2-3-3-6, but always comes up as 3-3-3-6. I didn't have the problems you did, but it's not exactly a "barnburner" either! It ticks me off because I could have gotten much faster ram for less money! By the time I was able to run tests, it was too late to return it. Murd Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Yeah... I think I may be avoiding Patriot until there is better support for it. Going to be RMA'ing the sticks once I get a reply from newegg about the restocking fee since the memory tested bad. Anyway for those out there wondering about this specific model, I personally didn't have luck with it.
Murd Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Got my reply from Newegg, looks like I'll be eating a 15% restocking fee to get a different brand... Also shot an E-mail to Patriot about my issue. Will see if they reply promptly enough. I plan on doing my RMA this tuesday or wednesday to give Patriot a couple days to reply. Can't wait too long or I can't RMA... dr_bowtie Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Murd.... Those sticks you have have the Infineon IC's which aren't good for much....I have mine at 210fsb and have heard a max of 220 at any timing and voltage. These Might work for you OR... These seem to be the preferred ram... There is a $40.00 difference between the two....I know the second ones are suposed to be TCCD....I just bought some today so I am curious I think the first may be (?) the second generation bh5??? I see now reviews and they haven't been on sale long.... I do have the 3200llk right now 2-3-2-5-1T and running fine I can choose to run them "agressive" in bios as 2-2-2-5 but....If I manually select those timings it really freaks and black screens?....good luck
Bonedog Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 The LL's have Infineon chips on them (read a review and they pictured it without the heat spreader). That's why 2 gigs of these cost about the same as 1 gig of the XBL. Have no clue what the EL's have.
Murd Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Yeah I've got 512's now, not the best quality ones I'll admit, but I really wanted 2x1Gig sticks. I know it really doesn't help with FPS in games, but I've seen it help with hard drive buffering in newer games (EQ2, WoW mainly). Thanks for the links though! If I end up giving up on running 2 1 gig sticks I may go that route.
cmay119 Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Murd try turning the DRAM Voltage up, I bet the bios has it set at 2.5/2.6 volts right now and that's probably not enough for the memory. If it's at 2.5v set it to 2.6v, if at 2.6v set to 2.7v. Once things seem more stable try to tighten your timings back to what the stock timings should be. RGone Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 This stuff is supposed to work at 2x1gig on DFI NF4 board. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820227210 RGone...
Murd Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Thanks! Will it work on NF3 boards as well? I would have gone NF4 but I didn't want to have to go buy a new vid card as mine is AGP... Not much AGP selection for NF4 that I could find.
Murd Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Upped the DRAM voltage, Windows loads now, going to run Memtest 86 all night, then Prime95 most the morning. Wish me luck!
Guest Blooz1 Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 I tested the ELK's I have at voltage up to 2.9 in Memtest, and couldn't even get up to 215 FSB! First, I ran Memtest (complete test cycles) at 200FSB, 2.7V, 2.5-3-3-6, and went through 25 complete cycles without errors. I repeated this testing with a change to 205FSB, all other parameters the same, and again no errors. I made a change to 215FSB at 2.8V, and ran tests again. I had 76 errors in Test 4, then had the system lock up in Test 5! I reset and changed to 2.9V, resumed testing. This time Test 4 had no errors, but again it locked up solid in Test 5! While at the 200 setting I had run through Everest, Sandra2004, 3DMark2001SE,Aquamark3, and SuperPi 1M and 32M without a hitch. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm assuming that the ELK's are good, solid "middle of the road" modules suitable for low to moderate overclocking.
